Yeah, that was awesome!!! Kind of embarassing for the Senator. She is nice enough to invite Sheehan, and then Sheehan responds by trying to sneak in an anti bush Banner.

She had to bring in a banner? Come on, there are more subtle ways to protest. That said, maybe this whole thing was her intent, in which case, mission accomplished.

Not a separate banner. I guess free speech is situational.

Eh, I wrote op-ed pieces in high school for the paper and I thought our principal was horrible. I know all too well that free speech isn't so free.

Actually, in high school there are restrictions on speech based upon court rulings. There are apparent distinctions made between what minors can say in the school environment, and other first amendment issues.

CNN - is reporting that she was arrested for wearing a shirt with an anti-war slogan, and handcuffed, and taken away.

Arrested for unlawful conduct for refusing to take off a t-shirt that cited the number of war dead. Nice to know speaking the facts is considered not protected by the First Amendment. Updated On: 1/31/06 at 11:51 PM

Oh, boy. Speech in public schools is a big fat complicated area. It's been getting more restrictive of late, too. (There's enough material there that I wrote my final Con Law paper on the subject. Oy.)

She is so stupid. Did she think anyone would have seen it there? If she wanted to be noticed she should have crashed the American Idol auditions.

This reminds me of Cohen v. California, a case in which a guy was arrested for wearing a jacket that said "F*CK the Draft" in a courthouse. Cohen won that case, but it was based partly on the fact that he wasn't actually in a courtroom but in a public area of the building. Hm.

I just think it was tacky in the first place. There are better ways to make political statements, but Sheehan keeps choosing only the options that get her more negative attention. It's doing nothing but giving media another excuse to talk about what the wacky war mother is doing now.

She could have protested just by sitting there with a yellow ribbon pinned to her shirt. The cameras would have found her anyway. But if she was going for the maximum amount of noise, though, no matter what the content, well...like I said- mission accomplished.

I also agree with you, Plum. She would have spoken VOLUMES by just being there - silently. They wouldn't have been able to keep the cameras off of her!

I believe it had the number of war dead on it, but I could not be certain. One picture I saw had her in a black t-shirt with a number beginning with 2,000 on it.
