Cindy Sheehan is known as a Bush protestor. Why should the Capitol police take their chances that she might interrupt the State of the Union address.
My bet is that Hillary Clinton had Sheehan removed.

Although I feel for Ms Sheehan's loss and agree with her on many things, I don't think the t-shirt was appropriate and violated the rules of the house.
Beverly Young (wife of a Republican Rep.)was removed for wearing a "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS" T-shirt at the same event. Though I don't think she was arreste and held in custody for two hours (and it probably happened AFTER the press got wind of Sheehan's arrest). My cynical side says it was damage control, but in either case both women we wrong.

Oh, shut up, Goth.
A few things- House rules don't allow demonstrations in the gallery. Understandable, because if they did, they'd never get anything done. Though C-Span would be a helluvalot more fun to watch.
Second of all, Sheehan wasn't the only one removed- the wife of Republican(!) Congressman Bill Young of Florida was removed for wearing a shirt that said "Support Our Troops."
ETA- Beat me to it, SNAFU.

please. It's a damn t-shirt. Neither women were wrong. Apparently Republicans never heard of the old "Sticks and Stones" saying......especially if they have to manhandle a woman simply for her t-shirt......ridiculous.

Elphaba-
IT'S THE HOUSE RULES.
Oy.
That's non-partisan, whether you like the rule or not.

Love this:
"It also shows that the father of the Constitution, James Madison, was right when he warned that, in times of war, the greatest danger to America would not be foreign foes but presidents and their minions, who would abuse the powers of the executive branch with the purpose of 'subduing the force of the people.'"

Goth said "Cindy Sheehan is like the dumb kid in high school that the bullies could always get to do stupid stuff."
The only dumb kid in high school is our worthless piece of s-hit president. And look at all the stupid stuff the corrupt right wing has had him do.

Then who's the bully?

And on a much needed lighter note:
The Postal Service created a stamp with a picture of President Bush. The stamp was not sticking to envelopes. This enraged the President, who demanded a full investigation.
After a month of testing, a special Presidential commission presented the following findings:
1) The stamp is in perfect order.
2) There is nothing wrong with the applied adhesive.
3) People are spitting on the wrong side

Goth, if she had merely been removed, you might have a point. But she was not. She was physically restrained, removed, and then arrested. She was not to take change the T-Shirt.
And, for the record, what kind of moronic congresswoman does not let her know that "oh, by the way, that shirt you have been wearing all day, it is against the rules."
I don't agree with everthing she does, but she at least deserves my compassion and respect for the sacrafice her son and she made in pursuing this foolish war.
It seems very few are being asked to sacrafice anything, and then, they are told to keep their mouths shut. So, while all those war profiteeres are wallowing in money and government contracts, while Jack Abramoff was off selling political favors to the Republican party, while George was off riding his bike with Lance Armstrong, Cindy Sheehan was grieving for her dead son.
You can listenn to the first three and ignore Cindy. I will listen to the one who actually had to sacrafice someone in our preemptive war against Iraq.

Um, she was asked to cover up the shirt, and she refused. So it's not like she was totally misinformed the whole time.
(Wow, this is starting to remind me of battles with the middle school dress code.)

Posted: 2/1/06 at 3:23pmThe problem with Cindy Sheehan is that she has gone beyond protesting the war. She has now made a business out of grieving mother, thereby exploiting her son's death. Vanity Fair's picture of her laying on her son's graves proves that.

Anyone else read the article and kinda feel a little sick with the statement "Department of Peace?"

"I don't see why you all object to the Capitol Police enforcing the law."
Because it seems like the Capital Police are rather inconsistent in how they enforce the law?
"WASHINGTON Feb 1, 2006 — Cindy Sheehan, mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq, wasn't the only one ejected from the House gallery during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt with a war-related slogan that violated the rules. The wife of a powerful Republican congressman was also asked to leave."
Asked to leave vs. being taken away in hand-cuffs and finger-printed?
Two very different responses.

We don't know how the two women responded; for all we know one was more belligerent than the other. And only one of them has a history of protest.
Here's my larger point- if you want to find an example of the oppressiveness of the Bush Administration, there's about 72 better places to look than here. Wiretaps, "you're either with us or against us", and Google invasiveness are all a lot more worrying to me than this.

NBC: Charges against Sheehan to be dropped
Antiwar mom removed from State of the Union address for protest shirt
BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 4:34 p.m. ET Feb. 1, 2006
WASHINGTON - Charges against antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan, who was arrested after a scuffle over a T-shirt she wore to the State of the Union address, will be dropped, officials told NBC News Wednesday.
U.S. Capitol Police took Sheehan away in handcuffs and charged her with unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor, when she showed up to President Bush’s address Tuesday night wearing a shirt that read, “2245 Dead. How many more?” — a reference to the number of soldiers killed in Iraq.
But Capitol Police will ask the U.S. attorney's office to drop the charges, NBC News’ Mike Viqueira reported Wednesday.
“We screwed up,” a top Capitol Police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He said Sheehan didn't violate any rules or laws.
Sheehan, whose son Casey died in Iraq, was not the only one ejected from the House gallery. The wife of a powerful Republican congressman was also asked to leave, but she was not arrested.
Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young of Florida — chairman of the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee — was removed from the gallery because she was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Support the Troops — Defending Our Freedom.”
The Capitol Police official said officers never should have approached Young.
Criticism from Rep. Young
Holding up the shirt his wife wore, Rep. Young said on the House floor Wednesday morning: “Because she had on a shirt that someone didn’t like that said support our troops, she was kicked out of this gallery.”
“Shame, shame,” he scolded.
