Okay, all the buzz about "Walk The Line", which I saw and loved inspired me to watch my DVD of "Coal Miner's Daughter" and I thought we'd discuss it! :)
I LOVE IT!!!!!!
Sissy Spacek was AMAZING and deserved that academy award! She sang beautifully and I liked the way the character evolved. The only thing I didn't like was the way some of her wigs looked. Maybe it was her skin-tone next to them or something.
Tommy Lee Jones was great a Doolittle. Maybe not one of my favorite characters ever, but he did the job and did it well! However, just like Sissy, his hair was a weird color looked weird on him. It made it look like he had too much make-up on.
and finally......
I LOVED Beverly D'Angelo as Pasty Cline. I actually liked her better than Jessica Lange's Pasty. She sang the part beautifully and really brought out her character. IMO, she should have atleast been nominated for the academy award!!!!!! I have both, "Melvin and Howard" and "Raging Bull", and I liked her better that Mary Steenburgen(who won) and Cathy Moriarty(who was nominated). I would have voted for her. Anyways, I love her scenes with Spacek.
As for the debate between Sissy Spacek and Mary Tyler Moore for the Academy Award. Well, I'm glad it turned out the way it did, but I can easily admit the Mary Tyler Moore is AMAZING in "Ordinary People". Both were deserving and if only one of the movies went the next year, they could have won over Katherine Hepburn for "On Golden Pond" IMO.
I have seen the film about 100 times. The "horny" scene is one of my favorites. It's very Loretta. We were backstage at the Opry one night and she had arrived late. The dressing rooms there are first come, first serve (ranking from the one closest to the stage, which was Roy Acuff's old dressing room,) so she didn't get one. There is a huge restroom backstage, so she just went there. We stood talking as she was getting ready. She told some random story about Doo coming home drunk and getting her all upset the previous week. She said, "I was so upset I went in a cut my own hair. Look! It's all uneven now. That damn man." She was a riot. I think I was 15 or so.
I love this film. It's perfection in my opinion.

I really like this one. And I remember being VERY confused when Ms. D'Angelo wasn't offered SWEET DREAMS.
obviously beverly made the smarter choice and filmed "european vacation" in 1985.

Choosing Mr. Chase over Mr. Harris? Nope, can't say I'd do the same.
I fell in love with that film the first time I saw it on the big screen. Sissy's performance was flawless. I watch it every year.
i love this movie. it sets a very high standard for the musical bio. listen to loretta's musings on the cd van lear rose and you'll hear a few good stories relating to her childhood. i think the movie loses it's way a bit when she has her breakdown; it's a bit too glossy. i wanted it to begrittier, but sissy did such a wonderful job of conveying her panic and sense of loss.

Sissy Spacek appeared with Loretta at the Grand Ole Opry and sang "Coal Miner's Daughter"
It was a shame that Beverly D'Angelo didn't get to do Sweet Dreams. She was great as Patsy Cline.
RobbO, you do make a good point about about Beverly D'Angelo European Vacation. Those movies had 4 in all and have become iconographic. Hardly anyone can tell you what Sweet Dreams is, but still it would have been nice.

Coal Miner's Daughter is one of my all time favorite films.
Glad you didn't mind Beverly D'Angelo's wig MTMANN. :)
beverly d'angelo was supposed to do sweet dreams it was developed with her mind. i forget why she ultimately wasn't able to do it.
anyone else here have the soundtrack...
i was never a big fan of country music but after seeing this film i had a newfound respect for it.
i love beverly d'angelo's cover of patsy cline's walking after midnight.
d'angelo and spacek out-did themeselves in the singing department here.
i love watching this movie back-to-back with lady sings the blues
I love the story of Sissy getting cast. They had a huge stack of headshots of actresses that they were considering. Sissy was in the stack. Loretta saw her and basically said, "That's her." She wanted them to offer her the part right then. They had so many other actresses that better resembled Loretta and Sissy didn't even know if she wanted it, but Loretta wasn't hearing anything else.
I loved how she evolved the character. When she was first starting out she was kinda wide-eyed and meek wearing those Dale Evan's Cowgirl outfits. Then, after Patsy died, she wore those pretty, long gowns and was the strong woman that Pasty was.
MTVMANN Beverly D'Angelo was nominated for COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER in the Best Supporting Actress category. I also was a bit bummed when I learned that she had not won. I mean she did her own singing and her performance was brilliant!

Slightly OT: Patsy Cline's death didn't happen like it was portrayed in Sweet Dream. The plane didn't fly into a cliff. They were flying in the fog and had engine trouble. The engine shut off and the plane crashed. No cliff involved.
This is probably one of my favorite movies, but I'm always a bit put off by how it seems like Loretta and Patsy are just suddenly friends. It may have happened like that in real life, I don't know, but in the movie their relationship comes off as a little bit underdeveloped to me.
