Long rumored to be coming, I fianlly found a bottle at nmy neighborhood Osco. It's the "No sugar" version of Coke Classic-- as opposed to "Diet Coke." It's being marketed towards people who want a sugar-free version of Coke, but for various reasons don't like the idea of a "Diet" drink.I love me some Diet Coke so I thought, how good can this be?
Well let me tell you. It's like licking the sweat off God's own backside. Heavenly doesn't come close. It's ambrosial. It's delightful. It's delicious! It's the Beatles of soft drinks. If Stephen Sondheim wrote a soda, he's write Coke Zero. Look for it in a store near you!
Funny how what I assume is the sound effect of Coke-Z being poured over ice also sounds like a crackling fire ... or like bugs doin' it on aluminum foil ...
I've tried Diet Coke with Splenda - because that was all that was at the store at the time - and it is ALMOST as good as regular Diet Coke...not as different as I expected...please, Joe, compare Zero in detail to normal Diet Coke...

OK I knew you guys could appreciate the magnitude of this discovery!
Diet Coke with SPLENDA: This has been available for a couple months. It takes the Diet Coke formula and replaces the Aspertame with Splenda. To me, Splenda does taste more like sugar, giving the Diet Coke a too-sweet taste. It's got that "too much syrup" taste, in my book.
Coke Zero: This is the Classic Coke formula, refitted with Aspertame (and that weird potassium asphyxiate or whatever). It tastes like Coke. It doesn't have the same mouthfeel as Coke, and it doesn't have that syrupy taste, but it also lacks the sort of bitter undertone that I have come to love in my Diet Coke. But it's wonderful. I would think you could serve it to a moderately discriminating Coke-head and they would think it was their usual. The only way to describe it is to say it's Sugar-free Coke.
It's the first new drink I've tasted that makes me think I'd switch from Diet Coke-- and to me, Diet Coke is as important as life itself. I drink it morning, noon & night. I can tell the difference between Diet Coke from a 20 ouncer, a 2 litre, a can or a fountain. I can tell if a Diet Coke is from McDonalds or Burger King. I can taste the difference between Diet Coke and Caffeine Free Diet Coke. My sister once served me a "SuperChill" diet cola and since then, I always bring my own when I visit.
The Zero packaging is very odd-- the Splenda Diet Coke is the Diet Coke logo with a swirl of blue in the mix. The Coke Zero logo is an all Black & White Coca-Cola logo with just a tiny touch of Red.
I'm the same way - I am very discerning when it comes to Diet Coke and can tell exactly where it's from. However, I find regular Coke to be too sweet and syrupy - you don't like DC with Splenda for that reason, yet you like Coke Zero...I need more...

Daydreamer I think that was true back in the early days of Diet Coke but I am pretty sure it's been all Aspertame (Or NutraSweet when it was still under patent) for several years now. The Diet Coke site doesn't list ingredients.
And Yes, Rath, again we prove ourselves to be the oddest identical twins ever-- Coke Zero DOES NOT have that syrupy taste that ruins Diet Coke with Splenda for me. Go find some!
Both of our bads, Joe... it's actually a mix of both...
"Unlike bottled Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, which are sweetened solely with aspartame, fountain Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi are sweetened with a blend of aspartame and saccharin, which was once listed by the government as a carcinogen."
I'll quit my threadjacking with useless sweetner talk and back to the glory that is Coca Cola Zero... (I wonder if the shortened version of the name will be Zero Coke)

i gotta go find me a can or bottle of this to try. still sounds like diet coke to me without the diet in front of it. :) isn't aspartame the sweetener in the regular diet coke(without the splenda)?

Thanks, that made me spit my (splenda sweetened) coffee back into the cup.
I bet it's ages before us Aussies get this stuff.
