I just saw Colin Farrell's new movie, A Home at the End of the World yesterday, and it was pretty good!

It has received mixed reviews from the critics, and understandably so - it's one of those stories that feels better as a book (which it originally was, by Michael Cunningham) or even as a stage play, but not really as a movie. It lacks a narrative shape or dramatic arc, and the dialogue feels stilted and artificial at times; it would probably read better off the page or sound better within the poetic space of the stage. I feel the movie could have greatly benefited from a director with a tighter vision of where the movie was going.

Still, the movie is worth watching for its remarkable performances. Even with the exclusion of the infamous full frontal scene (although we still get a bit of Farrell Flesh), Colin Farrell's performance is definitely worth catching. I must say, I fell in love with him in the movie; as the wide-eyed, innocent and sensitive (and sexually-ambiguous) Bobby, Colin is as mesmerizing as he is uttler adorable. His eyes will captivate you, as will his lovable boyish charm. It's a completely different Colin than we've seen, and he's even more irresistably sexy now that he's all sensitive and mysterious. Dallas Roberts is also fantastic as Bobby's gay best friend/love Jonathan. I didn't like the AIDS plot twist in the latter half of the movie, but I'm sure it plays out better in the novel (yet another example of how some things don't translate naturally to film). Robin Wright Penn is also great as Clare, the third leg of this unique household, but that's to be expected from her. An absolutely divine performance comes from Sissy Spacek as Jonathan's mother and Bobby's mother figure. She's a mother with a penchant for pot, to Jonathan's horror and Bobby's delighted assistance.

So catch the movie for Colin; after Brad Pitt's disappointing turn in Troy, Colin Farrell delivers the sexiest and most surprising performance of the summer.

Yes, but the snake is in the hole. I'll wait for the DVD...

Blue, you're right on. I liked the movie, too, but the book was way better.

Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

Isn't the book a musical?

No, it's a novel by Michael Cunningham. If there's a musical by the same name, it's not of this book.

I haven't read the book, but throughout the movie there were certain parts that definitely felt like they came from a literary narrative, but weren't properly translated into a dramatic context. But I enjoyed the movie enough to get me interested in reading the novel (and buying the DVD, too, to have Colin Farrell's adorable performance on hand, and also his alleged full frontal scene re: Colin Farrell in A Home at the End of the World).
