College - How Can One Possibly Afford It?
#0College - How Can One Possibly Afford It?
Posted: 3/8/05 at 3:35pmI really want to go to NYU this fall. How does one possibly pay for the almost $40,000 per year? I don't think I am going to get any major scholarships (I'm no genius and don't have the extremely high SAT scores). I understand you are supposed to take out loans, but really over $100,000 worth of loans? I filled out the FAFSA, but both my parents work, so I doubt I will get much. I know a job isn't really going to give me much. Just wondering how some of you guys already in college handle the financial aspect of it. I don't want to settle for "Southern CT State University" just because it is cheap. It seems like there is absolutely no way I can do it, but I would really like to. Just looking for some pointers and advice. Thanks.

I honestly don't know what to tell you if your parents aren't rich enough to afford it. I got bumped from a university I wanted to attend because I couldn't get enough financial aid.
Sometimes, though, you can qualify for partial aid that will lower your tuition to the point where a big, fat, Stafford Loan can cover the rest. Talk to a person at NYU's Financial office about your options, they'll be much more knowledgeable than most of us.

Posted: 3/8/05 at 3:48pmI hear ya, guys!!! Financial considerations are a big reason I ended up at the school I'm at. I opted not to even apply to NYU just so I wouldn't have to turn them down if I did happen to be accepted. They're an incredibly expensive school that's not overly generous in doling out the financial aid. Did you apply to any middle of the road schools that'd offer you more money? I don't know that I really have a whole lot of advice in the FA dept. I got a Pres. Scholarship and a grant...I've also got a Stafford Loan for a couple thousand dollars and work study for a couple more and I received some local scholarships for my freshman year. You always hear about all these scholarships that are online that are just "out there to be taken...thousands of dollars worth that go unused every year," but to be honest, I never really found much of anything that was usable for me. Gee, if only I were a left-handed poli-sci major who plays the bagpipes, and is also of Flemish decent." Seriously, some of them are crazy! Then, a bunch of others have such a drawn out application process w/ the essays and aps. that want to know your entire financial profile, etc, etc and are only for a few hundred dollars. It's a pain in the ass; I won't lie!!! Best of luck though!!!
