She simply turned down Hello, Dolly!, later taking over the role that was originally written for her.

Yes, Paradox, and when Merman took over HELLO, DOLLY! two songs that were initially written for her (but were dropped when Carol Channing took part) were re-inserted back into score:
"Love, Look In My Window" and "World, Take Me Back".
Damn, I could've used that as a Trivial Pursuit Question!
