re: Conservative Christians Worried About

God, Pengy, I really do love you.
Thank you. Yes. I say this all the time and people dismiss it out-of-hand...mainstream Christianity today is not built upon one thing Jesus said. It's built upon what Paul said.

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Unfortunately being from a lower class the historical Jesus almost certainly could not write, neither could his close followers. Paul was from a ruling class and a self-loathing individual, his sometimes elegant and poetic, but often venemous and destructive thoughts are actually what several of the gospel writers were trying to counteract.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

No, I got it, Gotham, I was just reiterating the point.

What do you care what all the heathens and pagans think anyway?

Please don't make a bunch of generalizations based on nothing.

There is a story of Jesus as a young boy being found in the temple discussing the Scripture with the rabbis. Obviously He could read, therefore we assume He could write. Furthermore, John 8:6 says that Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground.

Of His followers, Matthew was a tax collector, so obviously had some ability to write. Luke was a doctor and it is assumed that he could write as well.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Gotham, funny that you tell him not to make assumptions based on nothing, yet your decisions are nothing but pure conjecture as well.
#31

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Funny then that nobody who was actually with him managed to get a direct quote from him against the homosex!

Even when a teenager talking with the rabbis he didn't get around to it, and you know how obsessed teenagers are about not being perceived as gay. They go all Republican Christian Hypocrite Jim West on the topic!

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

oh my! The spreaders of hate get a taste of their own medicine! WAH.

Here's the deal: what these conservative Christians want is unAmerican. They would be pleased to see America as being "reclaimed for Jesus", which goes against EVERYTHING this country was founded on. And, they want to take away or deny other people's rights when no one is trying to take away or deny their rights.

My getting the right to marry does NOT affect them or deny them their rights. But, their putting up Constitutional Amendments DOES affect me and deny me my rights. THAT is unAmerican.

And any group that is behaving like the conservative Christians are DESERVES criticism and to be stopped from their "American Taliban" crusade.

And the rest of Christianity in this country should be JUST as interested in reclaiming the religion away from these nut jobs.

Furthermore, let's remember that these people aren't just wanting to take away gay people's freedoms, they want to take away straight people's freedoms: choice, sex, porn, etc. So, it will be VERY interesting when straight people (who haven't in general yet) catch on that their freedoms are under attack, too.

It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

Well, that's different. They actually believe you should die and you don't believe they should. You really shouldn't attack them for their beliefs.

Gotham those statements are not based on nothing;
The passage from Luke, implies Jesus could read because the author of Luke was trying to appeal to upper classes. Neither a tax collector nor a doctor would have been expected to write in the 1st century back water Roman town.
It is not conjecture but rather SEVERAL CENTURIES of scholarship.
The point you so convienently missed in your attempt to blast me is that Jesus did not write any of the works we have today, we are forced to make conjecture about the nature of what Jesus wanted.
I did not mention John for a reason, John's gospel is a philosophical resoursce and intended to spread the idea of Jesus, it was written well after the rest and has little relevance to the life of Jesus.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Yes but what they would tell you is that these translations were guided by the Holy Spirit, nee Ghost, and therefore they are accurate. The Spirit almost demanded co-directing credit on Mel Gibson's "The Jews Killed Jesus," but then declined when she realized that Mel was going to re-cut and re-release the movie without her input.

jrb: Most of the "living" or modern english translations fall prey to that, as does the NIV and New King James. The Revised Standard Versions, and several interliniar accounts try very hard to go back to the original languages and lose the vitriol of the anti-gay rhetoric.

Where are you Gotham? I have some more "generalizations based on nothing" to share with you.
I mean how else am I going to spend my time here in "preacher school"?

I'll pass on your arm chair theology. Jesus said, "Don't give what is holy to the dogs."

Jesus was Black, and smoked pot.
I got rid of my teeth at a young age because... I'm straight. Teeth are for gay people. That's why fairies come and get them

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

My arm chair theology?
Of course that quote is very interesting to be used as some kind of slander, considering it is intended to mean that all the teachings of God should be taken to heart by people and not thrown onto the ground as scraps, tossed aside as maybe irrelevant or inappropriate. Simply because they don't conform to your pre-existing belief structure.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Yes, only Gotham's 'armchair' theology is what matters. How dare other people read the same things and reach their own conclusions without being told what they think.

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Smartpenguin, who is studying the bible in a seminary (right) is so CLEARLY unqualified, as opposed to Gotham, who arguably is told what the Bible says each Sunday by a minister with an agenda.

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Thank you, Namo. (words I never thought I'd type) Jesus wasn't an intolerant person but those who claim to follow him today sometimes are. It's those people that give all Christians a bad name. And sadly, their actions have become synonymous with the religion. I'm very liberal and just yesterday a supposed friend was bashing Christians right in front of me. Funny how someone like this friend, who's so very 'accept me and don't judge because I'm gay' doesn't understand when I say 'accept me and don't judge because I'm Christian'.

And yes, some of us oh-so-nasty Christians think for ourselves. Some of us voted for Kerry. Some of us are fine with homosexuality, pro-choice and other issues that the stereotype isn't.

re: Conservative Christians Worried About

Absolutely Nia.
amd yes Bwaysinger you are correct, although I will admit much of my information is projected through a lens into what I want to see. Of course that is another problem, some peoplerefuse to see their side as biased when all of our sides are indeed biased, the question to ask is which bias causes the least pain and the most growth and community.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.
