Constantine ashamed of Rent?

I read an article in my local paper about Anwar Robinson, he works about 10-15 minutes away from my school (and my personaly favorite to win).
These are some excerpts from the article.
"Jersey 'Idol'"
- Matt Zoller Seitz
The Star Ledger
Monday, February 21, 2005
"It looks like the men outclass the women this year. There are already six men who seem like lokcs to advance, based on talent, favorable editing, or both: Robinson; Constatine Maroulis, who tries a little to hard to convince people he's a hard rocker; Anthony Fedorov, nicknamed "Tracheotomy Boy"...; Scott Saval, who looks like the guy from "Sling Blade" and sings like Aaron Neville; Justin Guarini lookalike Mario Vasquez; and David Brown, another dreadlocked soul singer with a killer voice"
"...leaves out Nikko Smith...Judd Harris...Bo Bice, the other long-haired rocker, who has a better voice and seems more authentic that Maroulis but lacked the same air-time."
"These are all raw amateurs....Maroulis was the lead in the touring company of "Rent" (a fact he'd rather people didn't know sicne it clahses with his rocker pose)...."

All of Constantine's 'moves' are just bad impersonations of Eddie Vedder.
Really, he's a total poseur and not much of a singer that I can tell.

First of all, I don't see what the big deal is. He never actually said that he was ashamed of being in Rent.
Besides, would people have differing opinions if someone stated Mario Vasquez's sexuality and it was in parenthesis (A fact he'd rather people didn't know because it clashes with his "star status")
So what? Some people don't need to have it posted on their forheads that they were in a touring company of an overpopulated show that almost everyone and their younger brother has done.
I don't know if you realise it, but the majority of casting of Rent comes from people who are not actors. They want "rocker musician types" for those roles - not theatre people.

And he plays a rocker, no less.
Exactly, SallyBrown.
Poseurs suck.
ETA: "Ashamed of Rent" is a bit misleading. It's the fact that he's trying to sweep something that he did under the rug because it interferes with his "image" that's the problem. Shouldn't the image be to be true to yourself?

Posted: 2/25/05 at 2:54pmSally, Rent is a musical. On American Idol, being called 'too broadway' is the kiss of death. It's understandable why he wouldn't want that preconception, but I have been wondering if he will mention it sometime.

yeah but "technically" its a rock opera
but still, I think that starring in RENT tour is a bit more rockish than American Idol.

To most people, broadway is broadway is broadway, and all shows are BROADWAY. There is no 'rock musical'. Hence him perhaps not wanting to talk about it.
I don't quite agree with hiding it, but I follow the reasoning.

Posted: 2/25/05 at 3:06pmRent might give some people rocker cred on here, but AI hardly screams Second Coming of the Sex Pistols, no matter how you cut it.

Sally, read what I wrote. I'm talking about the people who watch, not Constantine. I'm pretty sure he knows what kind of score Rent has, seeing as that he performed it for a year.

I'll eat some breakfast then change the world.

Might I add in here that a few friends of mine who saw the production of Rent that C was in hated it. Maybe it was a bad company and Constantine had a bad experience. That doesn't mean he hates the show.
I have a friend who had a HORRID experience in a show he was in, and he won't even put it on his resume. Doesn't mean he's ashamed.

Well, Prima, I wasn't going to bring it up, but since you did.
(Granted, even after getting canned, he still saw Rent with the new touring cast last year.)
