I feel incompetant!

I went to my eye doctor, and I couldn't get them in, and out, so he wouldn't give them to me! UGH! Anyone ever been frustrated with them? For those of you who have them, how long did it take to get used to them?

It took me two weeks of shuttling back and forth from my optometrists' office to be able to put them in. Don't worry too much about it.

Don't feel incompetant. It took me a while to be able to get them in too. I'm surprised he didn't give them to you though, even to practice using them at home.

All in all, it took me about a week of wearing them before I got used to them. Next time you go back, just relax and try again. They're really easy to wear once you can get them in your eyes the first time.

Aw, it's okay, they take a while to get used to. My optician is actually a friend of the family, so it made things a little easier. I managed to get them in the first time I saw him, but when I got them home I had a lot of difficulty. There are still times when I can't get them in, but it's much much easier now. You're probably sick of hearing this, but you really just have to relax if you can't get them in, and not get stressed out. Also, practice makes perfect- it really gets easier once you get used to them.

I never had problems with the soft lenses, but the gas perm are horrific to put in and take out. The first couple of weeks with gas perm felt like I had fingernails in my eyes. Because I have a rotated axis in my left eye, I can never see clearly with soft contacts, so I only use them for performances or special occasions.

The first time I did it was difficult because I was working with an insane woman who made me nervous. Before I went, I had practiced touching my fingertip to my eye, so I knew I could do it. But the lens kept curling up and the silly woman kept saying, "Maybe you're not ready for them." I finally got them in and have had very little trouble since.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I just...I dunno. I gave up (for now) because my eye was INCREDIBLY red from poking it for at lease half an hour. NOT fun!

I really want contacts...I hate my glasses. Do the doctors usually give them to you on the spot, or do you have to wait a while to get them? How long would it usually take (I know it depends on the doctor)?

hey kiddies, be happy you don't live in the Stoneage days of hard contact lenses.....now those hurt. I've had hard, gas-perm, and soft, and I'll stick with glasses.........

My optometrist sensibly wouldn't let me take them home until I could put them in and take them out by myself. I had to wear them a limited number of hours the first few days so my eyeballs could get used to them, but after that I was free to wear them all day. This was years ago, so I don't remember exactly, but I imagine there'll be at least some delay when the contacts get ordered to your specifications and shipped to the office.

I have an eye appointment to be "fitted" for contacts this Thursday. Well, if I wasn't nervous before! I hope I can get the little buggers in. I've been so excited to not be a "4-eyes" anymore.

millie: My MD says I will get a trial pack at the first appointment and then they will order more for me to pick up later.

The first time I tried to put one in at the eye doctor's office, it took me nearly two hours to get the bugger in. I had a very kind and patient nurse who kept telling me to try again, assuring me that once I got them in, I would have the hang of it. I got the right one in after all that time, then it took me 15 minutes to get the left one in. Significant decrease in time there. The first time is always a little difficult, but it gets easier really quickly and soon you'll be able to just pop 'em in and out.

I wear glasses... I have this thing about touching my eye... grosses me out.

I tried gas perm first at the insistance of my Doctor, those did not work for me like Mr. Matt said, like having fingernails in my eyes and I couldn't get them out without help.
About two years later I got another chance with soft contacts and the first time it took me 3 hours to get one in. I have always had trouble with them. I dread going to the eye doctor and trying to put them in which inevitably takes forever under pressure like that with everyone offering advice. My favorite was a particular Dr who watched me try a couple of times and then said, "No, you're closing your eye before it gets in, don't do that."
I finally quit wearing them altogether a couple of years ago.

Yeah, contacts are hard to get used to using. When you first get them you need a mirror.

Here's a tip: You can try holding your eye open with the hand on the same side as the eye you are trying to put the contact in(right eye...use right hand just in case I didn't make any sense)
by holding your upper eyelashes with the index finger and your middle finger to pull down underneath. Then put the contact on the other hand. This at least makes sure your eye is open.

If it keeps falling out sometimes by looking side to side or up and down positions the contact on your eye.

Sorry if I wasn't able to explain that well.

All it takes is practice.

The first time I got contacts, someone at the office helped me and I had to put them in and take them out twice before they let me go, it took me about 40 minutes. There's two things to get used to, getting them in, and how they make your eyes feel. The next day when I put them in I can't explain how much my eyes felt like they were burning. I think it lasted 20-25 minutes before they felt better. But with each day it hurt less and you get used to it, and the more you practice, the better you get at putting them in.
