This movie was one of the best modernizations of Shakespeare I've ever seen. Anchored by the thrilling direction and performance by Ralph Fiennes, the film is well-acted on all fronts and is often horrifying in the combat scenes. (I hear Gary Oldman is terrific Tinker Tailor coming out next week, and it's exciting to see the Best Actor race heat up with some superb leading male performances of late.)
Of the ensemble Brian Cox is particularly excellent, but no one can dominate a scene like that force of nature, Vanessa Redgrave. She continues to add to the mountains of evidence why she's one of the great actresses of our time.
I've been to some pretty empty 10am movies, but this one was packed!

I know what you mean. I went to the early showing of Shame this morning and couldn't believe how full it was.
Thanks for the review, I'm looking forward to seeing this tomorrow morning.

*shakes head* I still can't wrap my head wround morning movie showings... Maybe if we got them here I would, but it still seems wrong--I have a hard time walking out of any theatre and it still being light outside.
This sounds great, and your review Whizzer adds to the ones I've read. When I was a teen I was kinda obsessed witht the play (I think I thought it was cool to get into all the less well known Shakespeare plays) and I can't wait to see.

Ha frogsfan, I'm doing the flip-flop of you and seeing Shame tomorrow morning!
Eric, I didn't know the play at all and really I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen. Fiennes was such a loose cannon I was fearful he would either be killed or slaughter the entire cast at any moment.

I want to chime in and say that I also liked this adaptation a lot. In fact the further away from it I get timewise, the more I am liking it. Just go see it.
Vanessa Redgrave blew me away.
