Taxi commission reviewing fare structure Eyewitness News
(New York - WABC, September 13, 2006) - Eyewitness News has learned that the Taxi and Limousine Commission will hear proposals Thursday to review the fare structure under which the medallian cab industry now operates in New York City.
A source intimately familiar with the upcoming public meeting of the Commission's board tell Eyewitness News that among the considerations is a potential flat fare from Manhattan to JFK Airport. Currently, there is a flat fare from JFK into Manhattan, but no flat fare traveling to the airport.
Other items, such as the amount charged for waiting time, could also be up for re-evaluation.
As gas prices have soared in the past year, yellow cab drivers have clammored for higher fares and peak-hour and off-hour premiums. Fernando Mateo, the president of the state Federation of Taxi Drivers, has called a news conference outside TLC headquarters to make what he calls a "major announcement on yellow taxi compensation."
Our source says the TLC will take no action before holding public hearings on the fare issue sometime before the end of October.

They can charge more because there are a ton of tourist and they are going to use them no matter what. I don't think people will take less taxi's if the price goes up...
Supply and demand
I rarely if ever use taxis. I prefer to walk, take the subway or a bus. For years I lived in cities that weren't "walking" cities and am quite happy to be somewhere where you don't have to rely on a car.
Why don't you take up skateboarding?

Yikes, they already cost a fortune.
Well sadly, one can't even complain to the drivers because THEY aren't the ones making the $$ on any of the recent hikes. The rental/franchise or whatever fees were increased, so it was a complete wash for the actual drivers. The company owners are making more money though.
