As far as sending out 130,000 screener DVD's - all the other movies that ended up getting nominated for Best Picture opened in December and wee still in theatres in January. CRASH came out in the spring. They didn't want to be forgotten. The DVD's gave voters a chance to watch the movie a second time.
I think this might actually change the conventional wisdom that says the only way to be a serious Oscar contender is to release your movie in December.

Little point of clarification here: most films send out a DVD "For Your Consideration," most especially when they're no longer out in theatres or not offering Academy screenings. I worked for an Academy voter and he had every video imaginable from the year...as long as the studio itself was pushing it for a Best Picture nom.
