As far as sending out 130,000 screener DVD's - all the other movies that ended up getting nominated for Best Picture opened in December and wee still in theatres in January. CRASH came out in the spring. They didn't want to be forgotten. The DVD's gave voters a chance to watch the movie a second time.

I think this might actually change the conventional wisdom that says the only way to be a serious Oscar contender is to release your movie in December.

Little point of clarification here: most films send out a DVD "For Your Consideration," most especially when they're no longer out in theatres or not offering Academy screenings. I worked for an Academy voter and he had every video imaginable from the year...as long as the studio itself was pushing it for a Best Picture nom.

My friend's family received 5 dvds of Crash. One for the academy member, one for the member of the SAG nominating committee, and three more for the fact that all three were members of SAG.

I got one in the mail because I'm a SAG member - but it arrived AFTER the voting deadline for the SAG Awards.

Didn't matter - I had already voted for it for Best Ensemble.

We recieved 6. And it did matter.. while I didn't vote for it for best picture I had already totally forgotten about the movie til the dvs arrived. I am sure by this time last year I will already have forgotten about it again.
