Okay, so a double entendre based on a celebrity's name is a "blatant" reference to ejaculation. Well, clutch the pearls. Nobody's saying you have to be "interested" in either the campaign OR the product, Matt. But clearly, your negative overreaction to it belies your level of interest.
And how intriguing that Redhot thinks it's a "fiasco!" I find it a bit confusing however. Because "cumming" is the most important step before conception, and really, WHAT could be more "life affirming" than beginning conceiving new life? Isn't life affirmation the noblest thing imaginable? Why, I feel swept away in the life affirming aspects of Cumming: The Fragrance.
[Good thing that nobody here seems to know that "Celine Dion" is a French double entendre for "felching out the santorum."]

Now THIS is how to sell cologne...meow!

Posted: 8/5/05 at 11:56amMarquis - I have nothing against cologne (don't use it, but that's a personal choice). What I find appalling is what Matt summed up in his previous post - children are being exposed to a lot of stuff that, in my humble opinion, should be saved for their adulthood. I agree completely that a child shouldn't see someone in a tee shirt with cartoon people doing the wild thing - or tee shirts with adult language being worn around just about any and everywhere these days. If you had any idea what kind of man I really am, you'd know that I am hardly a prude, especially in the sexual arena. But I AM concerned with the types of things that today's youth are being exposed to. And I find it all a bit sad. I'm all for c*mming, I just don't want to see it's connotation being forced down people's throats through advertising. I know someone will quote that last line back to me now and make the obvious joke out of it - and yeah, thats funny, but the product itself and the way it is being marketed - NOT funny, to me.

You are using the homoerotic language of the extremist right wing, Redhot. They are always lamenting homosexuality being "forced down their throats" and "shoved in their faces."
Second, this obsession with "the children" is generally so disingenuous. Why is it people can't simply OWN their own discomfort and any and all reactionary prudery that discomfort might imply rather than pretending to care about "the children?"
"It's the guy's name Billy. Just like 'Celine Dion' is the lady's name." Period, end of discussion.

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:26pmEnd of discussion for YOU perhaps, Namo. I own every one of my feelings and I'm not a prude. I DO worry about how children are being raised these days, bad parenting and all, especially now that I have a new niece who I adore. I hate the fact that there is no way to shield her from the exposure she'll get to all that sexual, in-your-face type of hoopla thats floating around out there these days- on Television, in the papers, on people's tee shirts, being spouted by teens on the subways - it's all in just plain bad taste.

"If you had any idea what kind of man I really am, you'd know that I am hardly a prude, especially in the sexual arena."
This is my point, redhot. I have a concrete idea of the type of man you are and that's what strikes me as so disingenuous in your hand wringing about "the children." You think you're the first person with concerns about the environment children are growing up in? This concern has been there for centuries.
Largely, it is projection of the guilty consciences of the adults who are so "concerned" rather than anything that would actually register with a three year old. However, freak out about something you don't want your niece to see, make a big deal out of it, and you'll guarantee she'll be way more interested in the forbidden material than if you just moved her away from the source of what is offending you or just distracted her from it.
To expect the entire world to be child safety protected is foolish.

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:35pmInterestingly enough, Tommy Tune wrote about that very topic in his book. Something to the affect of staying in a hotel with a friend on the road and givng themselves facials...

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:44pmEven more interestingly, many gay men of a certain stripe reacted quite negatively to Mr. Tune's relentless sexual disclosure in that book. I believe the most frequently used phrase to dismiss the contents was something you wrote a couple of posts ago, Redhot, "it's all in just plain bad taste."

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:46pmNamo - if you're basing your opinions of me on my posts here - boy do you have a lot to learn. LOL. I haven't even begun to plumb the depths of my personality and likes or dislikes on these boards - (not that I plan to...some things must be left a mystery!)...but you seem to be basing your opinons on my, oh what was it you said? (too lazy to look up the exact quote) somthing about need for cherubs with wings watching over me. Boy do you have the wrong idea. Just because I happen to have called my Act Angels All Around Me (a line from a song written by my musical director), and the fact that I happen to wish the world were a kinder, gentler place, doesn't mean that I can't appreciate a good sex farce, joke, whatever. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to protect the innocent. Life is harsh, and they'll find it out soon enough without haveing it forced down their throats. There has to be a time in a life when, to quote a song sung by Grace Jones, "joy and innocense prevail" otherwise, what will they/we have to compare that time to? I have a good quote for these situations: Don't let the bastards grind you down. I like that. I've managed to keep my head above water for 43 years in the face of some of the most disheartening adversity which I will not bore you with, and I'm proud of turning out to be what most of my friends and aquaintances consider a "good man". I enjoy a healthy debate as much as the next guy, but when it all gets mired down in the muck of name-calling and only the most negative of comments are allowed, it ain't for me.

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:47pmSo Tinny, is this a BOYCOTT because of the sexual nature of the campaign? Do you own a Madonna CD? Christina Aguilera? Do you shop at Abercrombie? Because if this is about the way this Cologne is being advertised and you won't buy it because of that, you'll be shopping at a lot of Dollar stores, because in case you didn't know "Sex Sells!"

Posted: 8/5/05 at 12:51pmGee, I didn't find anything at all offensive about Mr. Tune's disclosures. He did it in a very lighthearted way. I heard him read from the book at a Barnes and Noble one day and got my copy immediately - he's never been one of my favorite performers, but as a person, I think he has some valuable things to say.

"Namo - if you're basing your opinions of me on my posts here - boy do you have a lot to learn."
No, actually, I am not doing that. One of the lovely things about being anonymous and not posting a photo of one's self on the internet is the unfettered voyeuristic glee one can have while observing somebody who HAS published his or her photos as he or she behaves the way he or she behaves out in the real world, perhaps imagining that nobody knows who they are anyway, so what the heck? In public and semi-public places, as it were.
I've always been an observer and a chronicler, it's my nature. And some people just provide others with SO much to observe. To them, we remain ever grateful.

Geez, so much for trying to keep it a lighthearted debate (which you always say that you are all for). Someday, maybe you'll make your agenda clear to those on these boards who give a sh*t. I've already wasted too much of my day trying to play along. Time to do something good for the soul.
Ciao for now, fellow posters.

MRS ANNA: [Singing]
The children, the children,
I'll not forget the children,
No matter where I go I'll always see
Those little faces looking up at me...
That Prince Chululongkorn
Is very like his father.
He's stubborn-but inquisitive and smart...
I must leave this place before they break my heart
I must leave this place before they break my heart!
Goodness! I had no idea it was so late.
