Okay Namo, I've had it.
Celine Dion is NOT a lesbian soccer mom. EVERYONE knows shes a tranny who is about to reveal to the world that she was really born a man and that her husband is really her father.

"... screwing in playgrounds..." My, Matt, but you DO have flights of fantasy, don't you?
Redhot, I didn't see your earlier response until now. "But in the past 6 months or so, you've degenerated into a...well, someone I can't be bothered to waste my time on any more after this."
I'm sure it's just a coincidence that it was about six months ago that I was one of the few people who didn't jump on the bandwagon telling you it was a great and fabulous idea to quit your job without another lined up! But really, admit it, you can't be bothered to waste time on me any more because I don't believe in angels, isn't it?

Posted: 8/4/05 at 4:29pmWhat I'm not quite getting here is why it's tacky of Alan Cumming to use a suggestive naked picture of himself when advertising his fragrance, but it's not tacky to use a studly, suggestively posed naked man as an avatar. We use avatars to suggest something about ourselves, so all in all it creates an odd juxtaposition. I'm not bothered by the avatar, nor am I bothered by Alan Cumming...it just seems a tad inconsistent.

In order for it to be consistent, you have to set yourself up as an arbiter of taste. The first thing you do is declare your parameters by announcing something like, "Call me old fashioned..." and then from there you describe something as being across the line of what would be "tasteful" or "acceptable" to a person who is "old fashioned."
If you happen to have an avatar that is a muscular, shirtless, moustachioed nude model, well, the fact that its yours indicates that it is inherently not offensive to somebody who is "old fashioned."
I hope that clears it all up for your Iflit.

Namo, I guess you missed out on the fact that the playgrounds line was a PARODY of your generalisations of me. See? I can do it, too.
And mocking someone for their religious preference is not only low, but desperate. Oh no! We don't share Namo's views! Now he's gonna...well...he's gonna tell us we're...what? Wrong? That we should think like him?
What the hell is your point, Namo, for all this? You think the ad is funny or artistic or intelligent or whatever and if I don't, I'm ignorant in some way? And then you have to ridicule my opinions? Good grief! Just because you think your toys are better than mine, doesn't mean I want to play with them.
Sorry, but it's an opinion, and I'm not sure why you care so much about what I think of a tacky and not particularly clever ad campaign. Or maybe you just needed someone to harrass and it hasn't been me for a long time. Whatever it is, it is crabby and a bit irrational.

Matty [and Redhot who is not reading this], the reason I joined in this thread is because I never cease to be taken aback by just what brings out the prudery of some people. I really felt you were missing the parody. "Screwing in playgrounds" has no reference point in everything I wrote, here or anyplace else, that's why it failed me as funny or parodic. It lacks, is what I'm saying.
And since New Age isn't a religion, but the inspiration for tchotchke shops and mall pushcarts, it's more merchandising I intended to parody than religion. To any gullible types I offended who need to believe in winged cherubs for their religious practices, I'm sorry.
I still think anybody who is actually offended by the name or the marketing of the Cumming brand is a dullard.

The reference point for the playgrounds comment was your "What about the CHILDREN?" comment. It wasn't that hard to figure out. If you actually knew me, then you would not have been taken aback by my comments. I don't care about the nudity. I don't care about his name. It's the blatant reference to ejaculation that I think is innapropriate for a public ad campaign. That's really not THAT prudish. Good Lord, I was in Naked Boys Singing for a year, I'm not that big of a hypocrite. I can be a bit conservative about stuff like a T-Shirt with a cartoon guy screwing a cartoon girl quite explicitly should not be worn at a theme park (which I have seen), just like I don't think 20-foot billboards of dead fetuses should be displayed for weeks at a time near a day care center (which I have also seen). And while I don't think this ad campaign is that extreme, I do believe it's intentional crudity overshadows any attempt at ingenuity or artistry. And that puts me off from having any interest in it.

Beaver - thanks for digging up that thread - I re-read it and stand by what I said. Thought I was getting senile there for a moment - LOL - but I remember it now.
Oh, and Matty - your last post summed up exactly what I feel about the whole Cumming fiasco.

Everyone has a right to an opinion.
I think Alan Cumming is a brilliant actor.
Good for him. Hell, if someone named a cologne after you, why not do it. Would you turn down a big check? I think not.
If it does well, maybe he can do something Off Broadway.
I would love to see him in Hedwig.
