Cursing

Am I the only one who finds cursing superfluous on this board? I mean the only reason people use those words in the first place is if they are mad and do not have any way to reply to someone else's argument so they resort to these "filler" words. Which is really all they are is filler. They are words people use because they can't think of anything to say. The sooner those words come out of someone's mouth the sooner I see how limited their vocabulary and ability to argue are. Cursing is not going to help you get your point across with me. It just makes me think your argument isn't holding any water and you can't admit when you are wrong. Anyone else feel the same way?

re: Cursing

I agree, esp. when it's being typed because you should actually be thinking of what you're writing. But when I'm speaking, I find I curse a lot more than I realize, and it's really quite uncouth.

I was talking with a decidedly unprudish girl friend the other day and I used the C word that rhymes with Bunt to describe a particularly unpleasant female I know, and my friend hunched over and cringed. It's really quite an awful word, but if used sparingly - like any other swear word - can be effective in getting your point across.

Edit: Actually, I mean to say that it's effective in expressing your emotions if used sparingly, but does not make your point or opinion carry more weight, if that makes any sense.

re: cursing

Oh, please. People who don't use "curse words" use alternative words. Instead of sh*t they say "shoot" instead of damn, they say "darn". Words that mean the same thing to convey the same point. It's ridiculous.

re: cursing

This reminds me of a line from "Inherit the Wind"

Drummond: I don't swear for the hell of it. Language is a poor enough means of communication. We've got to use all the words we've got. Besides, there are damn few words anybody understands.

I agree with that sentiment. Sometimes curse words are the only thing that will get through to some people.

re: cursing

But I maintain it needs to be used *sparingly* in order to have the full effect.

You're right Matt, but I am talking people getting pissed off and attacking others using those words, but I didn't clarify because what is a thread like this without a little controversy? re: cursing

re: cursing

I curse all the time, not so much online. I actually started to curse more once I hit college, I never cursed when I was in High School. It's not something I'm proud of but I don't even notice I do it anymore.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: cursing

Well attacking someone unnecesarily is uncalled for, curse words or not.

re: cursing

I can't decide what my opinion is on this topic...I can say that I don't really like when people use curse words, but I am guilty of that myself. I have not gone to school one day since 5th grade without hearing a swearword. However, my parents are really respectful of me, and do not swear in front of me--nor do I in front of them.
I swear more on the Internet than I do off of the computer. Let's face it...curse words are everywhere, and are becoming second nature. I don't think there is any way to stop this.

Just yesterday one of my friends was over here, and she starting talking about someone she was mad at, and she was swearing left and right. She did this right in front of my mother!! I'm thinking "Omg...what is she doing?!" And I looked at her w/ one of those "Uhh..excuse me...mom...right there!" and she said "What? you're mom knows we swear." And I just left it at that. But then later on she did it again!! And I gave her the same look and she said "What can I do? I'm a vulgar child. I have a vulgar mouth. I can't talk w/out swearing, what do u want me to do?" And I said "THEN DONT TALK". I mean, how disrespectful is that, to swear in front of an adult (when you are younger than them, that is. You can determine when it is appropriate or inappropriate to use certain types of language in front of certain people.) I couldn't believe it.

I also agree that when using a curse word sparingly, it can give a certain punch to a statement. How common of a word is 'bitch' these days? Hello, it's like "I'm so mad at her, she's such a bitch" just b/c she didn't return your lipstick. But then there's "OMg...she stole my boyfriend...what a bitch!" Isn't it funny to see the reaction on someones face when one of those 'goody-two-shoes' sets off a curse word? They get one of those blank-stares. Fun stuff.

I guess I've never really thought about curse words being bad...inappropriate in certain situations, yes, but also inevitable.

re: cursing

I rarely swear. I mean, I swear more than I did in high school, but still very rarely in comparison to the rest of the college students I'm around. That's why when I called John Edwards a 's***head' under my breath during the vice presidential debate, the television was put on mute and everyone in the room opened their eyes, dropped their jaws, and stared at me for a good 30 seconds. I found it entertaining. Especially because EVERY PERSON I was with had been swearing about at least one of the debaters before I opened my mouth.

Now mind you, I'm not proud of my lapse, but the fact that the impact words have is indirectly proportional to the amount you use them suggests that never using them gives you a powerful tool in language that most people waste. It's a nice bonus.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

re: cursing

I try not to swear a lot when I'm talking. In arguments, I believe that when people start cursing at you- it shows a weakness and the fact that they give up on facts or anything, they'll just yell at you until it's over. And then I believe I've won if I keep my cool and keep on going.

I hate how it's used every 2 seconds...but once in a while, hey, it happens. When it happens, people KNOW that I'm really upset.
