Yeah I'm also thinking Linklater. Whoever wins DGA is USUALLY the director win for The Oscars. Technically, Birdman is in front but I can't see DGA passing on Linklater here. Some think it will be a split year and it could happen, but if AGI doesn't win here, I think he is done.

Wow! So the artificial all-in-one-take bit went over bigger than the actual filmed-over-12-years bit. Does this give Birdman the edge on Oscar night? I thought the performances were great but I was less than enamored of the screenplay. But then I didn't think the screenplay of Boyhood was its major virtue either so...

Yeah, a story about how brutally hard it is to age gracefully in the entertainment industry. Revelatory. Oh, I know, don't shout me down: why, it's a great American metaphor, men over 50 everywhere will see themselves in Michael Keaton, trashing dressing rooms as he's stalked by himself in a superhero costume. Okay. Of course. Get ready: it's got a lock on the big trophies coming our way.

Wow Birdman is the new frontrunner. Pleasantly surprised! AGI might win that Oscar after all.

I still think Linklater will win best director, but Birdman is now the heavy favorite for best pic after sweeping all the guilds.

Interesting, I think the directorial Oscar is now a lock, but that best picture could still swing to "Boyhood." By a very narrow margin, perhaps. The directors make up only a bout 6% of the Academy. So it's the overall membership, the preponderance of which are actors. Which seems less likely to vote for the rarefied "Birdman." But I may be very, very wrong. They don't like to be told what's the best, and with all of the major critics' organizations jumping on "Boyhood" so early, they had a chance to anoint their own. And one of their own it is: a story about artists and their plight. I think "Birdman" certainly speaks to actors. That factor alone made undermine everything else above. I know a lot of theater actors who loathe the film, but obviously for very different reasons.

I don't have a problem with Inarittu being honored for his direction of Birdman. The movie is brilliantly directed. For that matter, so is Boyhood.
Boyhood is a much better movie. But my problems with Birdman are all script-related. They have nothing to do with the work of the cast or the director.

Oh what a pity that the DGA was suckered in by BIRDMAN's empty fireworks. Sad sad sad. My give-a-sh*t level for the Big Night is rapidly dwindling -- Mr. Harris has his work cut out for him.

In all, this has been a very exciting award season. Many thought Keaton had it in the bag until Eddie Redmayne won SAG. That was a nice surprise and now this. I'm almost certain it will be a split year but if Birdman continues with this sweeping, I may change my predictions right before the big night.

If you're going to complain about BIRDMAN having a gimmick, you can't say BOYHOOD doesn't have one. They both have a "gimmick," even if one worked better for other people than others. For me, take away the 12 year factor of BOYHOOD and you're left with a pretty pedestrian movie about one of the least interesting movie character/actor I can imagine.
I thought BIRDMAN was spectacular, and I'm so happy Inarritu is getting his due. BOYHOOD seemed like such a sure thing, I always love it when the race gets interesting this late in the game.

I can say BOYHOOD doesn't have a gimmick -- it has a remarkable style of filmmaking whereby, for the first and only time in film history, a group of characters is followed over a period of years that corresponds to the number of years the film took to produce, you get to see the actors age in their roles as their characters age in their onscreen lives. A remarkable, unprecedented accomplishment, absolutely essential to the film's impact, a transcendence of all the usual tropes of multi-year storytelling: different actors taking on the same role as years supposedly pass, latex aging makeup, and so on.
BIRDMAN, on the other hand, is one cheap filmmaking gimmick after another, the long long long takes blatantly stitched together to make an illusion of seamlessness, a bunch of Big Scenes For Actors that never coalesces into anything of interest or importance at all, a whole cheesy BLACK-SWANesque level of Is It Real Or Is He CRAZY bullsh*t. BIRDMAN is a void wrapped in an emptiness shrouded in an absence tied up in a bow of technical showboating designed to disguise how utterly useless a filmmaking and filmgoing experience it really is. Gimmickry at its purest.

The talent connected to both films is extraordinary, and factions of the movie-going audiences love both for different reasons. They are so far apart, in terms of intention, tone, style and genre, we do neither a favor defining them by the word "gimmick." I've been harder on "Birdman" than I expected, because I admire so much of the work within, because I found its final minutes so hard to accept; they ruined the experience. Many would argue, that's the nature of storytelling, and art itself. In a way, pitting them against one another is unfair by any standard. But we love horse races, and this one just changed.

Is it possible that the battle between Birdman and Boyhood could allow either The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything to walk away with the prize? Keaton was hailed as a shoo-in not long ago but Redmayne now appears to be out in front.
