I'm shocked no one has brought this up yet. I saw it this past weekend and thought it was absolutely brilliant. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto will score Oscar nods for their brilliant performances. (I think Leto has a better shot at winning-the best actor category is really tight. I told a friend of mine after that he'd have made an interesting Angel in Rent if he could sing.) It's truly a wonderful film that give the AIDS crisis a bit of a different angle (the 'protagonist'-I say that with quotes because he isn't the most likable guy at first-is not gay-and I thought that was an important element here. Too many people think AIDS is a 'gay men's disease' and it's not.)

Anyway, I'm hoping this gets some awards-it sure deserves some. It's a powerful story and brilliantly acted. (What I appreciated most was that it wasn't sanitized really-Woodruff, the main character, really is a jerk when the story begins, then the story unfolds and he slowly changes.)

You shouldn't be that shocked because people have brought it up already. Dallas Buyers' Club

I guess you aren't familiar with Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars.

I don't know much about Leto aside from his stint on "My So Called Life". Also, Angel is arguably a different kind of singing (I think it's a little more legit in its sound).

I think Leto can get in but I'm not very confident about Mathew. The Best Actor race is very tight and I could see Mathew being the John Hawkes of this year. My predictions for Best Actor are:

Chiwetel Ejifor
Leo Dicaprio
Bruce Dern
Robert Redford
Tom Hanks

I would love it if Leto won, but I think Michael Fassbennder will take Supporting Actor.

I think Leto has a great shot at winning. His role is Oscar bait and his performance is Oscar worthy. I also think the film's significance will go a long way towards getting him an Oscar. (He is utterly incredible in that role.

And both gentlemen (together with Fassbender in supporting) have Independent Spirit nods-not bad. (I think the film should have been nominated.)

I really *liked* it, but didn't love it. That said, I did love Leto and to a lesser extent all of the other actors. That said, I'm glad to see Jean-Marc Vallee make an interesting English language film, after being disappointed with his first English film, The Young Victorian (which wasn't bad, but...)

I recommend to anyone his big Quebec breakthrough, C.R.A.Z.Y. a semi autobiographical film about growing up gay and Catholic in Montreal. It's very, very good, and the reason it didn't get more exposure in the US (and, apparently, why it was not chosen as Canada's entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the Oscars that year) was due to the Weinstein Company buying the remake rights, although as of now nothing seems to have been done with them.
I believe Netflix has it with subtitles

here's the trailer they did when it was shown at MOMA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCvQ2OpCj8A
