That's not such a huge deal. School boards do this all the time. The principal is pretty lame though to excuse his actions with "We've done too many dark shows." He should have discussed that with the directors before they made a decision.
Well I think its completely justified considering they just had a student pass away...
I think it was the right decision, but that's so sad for the guy who was cast as Sweeney Todd. If I got that role and then was told the show was cancelled... I would cry for days.
good, HS should not do Sweeney Todd
So they don't want a "dark" show, and then pick one where kids are on the run from Nazis???
They go from the sublime to the riduculous - the amazing Sweeney to the sappy, disgusting, overdone Sound of Music. My sympathy to both the student actors and the parents who have to watch it.

I think it would be nice if composers and playwrights had the integrity to say, "You know what, my show _________ should NOT be performed by high school students."
Too bad Sondheim was really involved with creating the HS version of Sweeney Todd.
Well it is a very metaphorical show and it's very dark and some people aren't comfortable with that. Like how Sarah Palin banned Merchant of Venice in Alaska. Because that play is SO offensive and dark. NOT. Way to ban Shakespeare.
I think they should be allowed to. It wouldn't have been good though. So sick of the sound of music though. It's gorgeous the first hundred times but now it's kind of old.
