We all know Dame Maggie Smith is a brilliant dramatic actress, but I think her forte is comedy. I am watching "First Wife Club" right now and she is making me convulse, I am laughing so hard. From facial expressions to the delivery of lines . . . complete brilliance.

I first saw her on Broadway in Private Lives, when I was in high school. She played Amanda and her husband Robert Stephens played Elyot.
I will never forget the moment when she recognized him on the terrace of the adjoining honeymoon suite. She did a perfectly executed triple take that culminated in her involuntarily climbing a good 15 feet up the trellis.
And her line reading on "Now, that's tacky" in Neil Simon's Murder by Death is imprinted in my brain.

Posted: 1/3/07 at 1:03pmMaggie Smith is my favorite actress. I love her in Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, but will say she's hilarious in Travels with my Aunt, California Suite, Sister Act, Gosford Park, The First Wives Club and Murder by Death...the list goes on and on. I want to see her on stage someday. Come back Maggie!

Ah, morosco, I love Maggie in that film. Her remark about Diana Rigg being a chorus girl is marvellous - 'There she was, kicking her legs up higher than everybody else. And wider.' I watched her a couple of nights ago in 'A Private Function' again. Her delivery of Bennett's lines are priceless. Loved her in 'The Lady In The Van', too.
