I just bought some new furniture at Office Depot here, and the salesman shakes my hand (my BAD hand that became BAD in Budapest)...and I have to ask you all...why, Why, WHY do little geeky guys shake hands like they are Godzilla or the Hulk, the little idiot RE-injured my finger and now I am in such pain....
ARRGH
I'M MAD AS HELL AND I WON'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.......

That goes to show, being polite doesn't pay!
Sorry about your finger elphaba! I hope it gets better soon.
I have a bigger question. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and (when the drugs are running low) my hands are in terrible pain. Why is it that EVERY time I go to the rheumatologist for a treatment, they insist on shaking my hand? (I learned a couple of weeks ago to just hold my hands up and shrug when they do that. But WHY do they do it?)

For reasons like this, you should keep the finger bandaged until it is fully healed. You may not need the bandage, but it will prevent others from shaking your hand.
Experience has taught me about this: I am Catholic and there's a portion of the Mass where we exchange the sign of peace (a handshake). When my hand was injured, the people around me saw the bandage and just gave me a verbal greeting.

Elphaba, are you taking arnica tablets to heal your bruise/wound faster?
You can even buy topical creams and ointments of arnica in a health food store which speed healing.
Skin cream with a good concentration of beeswax in it is also healing and is supposed to have an antibacterial effect. I have a special one made for me at a farm in NH but I recommend the Burt's Bees eye cream with royal jelly and beeswax, it's good not only for eyes, but wounds everywhere, sometimes heals my skin overnight. Also the Dr. Burt's Comfrey Ointment and the Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme are excellent, you could use either on your hurt hand and they also have beeswax.
I like Neosporin, it helps heal quickly as well if you also cover the wound. I get the new little "Neo to Go" foil packets.
Calendula is also good for skin.
Bromelain is another supplement that aids healing, as in skin and fascia tissues.

I don't like to touch other people on their skin. God knows when they washed their hands last and what or whom they've touched lately.

Wow Mamie, sorry to hear that. They should know better.
SorryGrateful, love your Leslie Howard av. You would hate to take the crowded NYC subway in the sticky bare-armed, bushy long-haired summer.
Elphaba, is your hand feeling better?

I don't think there's anything wrong/rude with smiling at the person and saying something like "thank you, but I [have an injury][have athritis][am like that Monk character on tv] and can't shake your hand." I think most people would be cool with that, and if not, tell 'em to take their hand and scratch their rear with it, you ain't shakin' it!

Thanks, nomdeplum. I'm on a massive Leslie Howard/Bette Davis kick in NetFlix right now.
And I ride the Red Line every day, so I know about hairy, sweaty, nasty people. I just don't like them. I'm going to have to get a full body condom some day.

Gad I love that "nomdeplum" nickname.
It just makes me smile and chortle.
You ride the very same 1-train (and occaisional 2/3) that I do, SorryGrateful?
Hope the cream helps, Elphaba. The arnica and bromelain are great supplements--worked for me when I needed them this May/June.
