Danny Kaye and Olivier -- will we ever know for sure?
Danny Kaye and Olivier -- will we ever know for sure?#1
Posted: 11/24/07 at 9:46pmSorry, a terribly old topic, but I cannot watch WHITE CHRISTMAS (blasting on ABC tonight), and watch Danny in eye shadow mincing across the dance floor, then flee the clutches of Vera Ellen, and not think of Sir Larry batting his eyes at La (le) Kaye. Will we ever know? It's been denounced in recent years -- the various Vivian Leighs tomes come to mind -- but inquiring minds cannot let it go.

Posted: 11/24/07 at 10:28pmYeah there was also one of Larry giving Danny a hummer, but Joan Plowright had it pulled. She ain't a dame--she's a bitch.

Posted: 11/24/07 at 10:49pmI do love Danny, and never tire of watching him. The twinkle in his eyes -- he's in on every joke, even those about him. I bet he was a good time, in the right company. He was a real bitch on TWO BY TWO, but save that for the other boad. WHITE CHRISTMAS is such a perverse bit of 50s fluff. The garish color, the Edith Head mistakes on the women. Dean Jagger as a prissy old general who's always moist-eyed and uncomfortable once the room becomes co-ed (!). Bing Crosby smoking a pipe and sipping milk just before kissing Rosie Clooney -- what enticing breath, no? (But Bing creeps me out with or without tic tacs.) Vera Ellen doesn't speak and has that strange, uh, stance, revealed when she dances. As a friend once said, Ann Miller's legs make a perfect "A", Vera Ellen makes an "H." Exactly.

WHITE CHRISTMAS has one of the most ridiculous storylines. I can never watch it without commenting on the absurdities. Just one after the other.
But I still love it.

I LOVE White Christmas! There is a theatre here that shows it every christmas and it takes on a Rocky-Horrorish quality as the crowd yells out cues to the cast.
My favorite moment is when Bing changes after the show and is wearing dingy white jockey shorts. Va va va voom!

Posted: 11/25/07 at 2:28pmAmazing how Joan Plowright chose to look the other way in regards to Olivier's homosexual dalliances and still managed to bear him three children.

I have known women who were willing to ignore their own unhappiness and lack of fulfillment in order to remain married to a "great" man. It's their choice, I guess.
Joe, you are a sick man. (But I love you just the same.)

Funny you should mention that, Auggie. I was watching some of it yesterday during one of Ms. Ellen's dance numbers. At one point her legs were spread wide in a split, and I noticed the yardage of material wich was necessary to span that crotch!
sorry if this was gross!

Posted: 11/25/07 at 4:39pmVera Ellen was an enigma. And she must've had problems with dialogue, because at a certain point in WHITE CHRISTMAS, she just ceases to speak. As for the yardage to cover her pudenda, maybe she had a secret.

I have blocked a lot of it because it was just so sad. I read her biography and it just left me feeling so sorry for her.
Among other things, she had a severe eating disorder and two unhappy marriages, and she lost her only child to SIDS.

How about Randolph Scott and Cary Grant? Will we ever know about that one too?
And I adore White Christmas... cockamamie plot, Barbie-doll legs, and all! It never ceases to put a smile on my face.

Wasn't Vera Ellen married to Rock Hudson, briefly? Very briefly, I would imagine...
I could be wrong.

Vera-Ellen "dated" Rock Hudson for 3 years, according to some accounts, but they were never married. Her two husbands were Robert Hightower and Victor Rothschild.

I love Vera-Ellen in that costume of a white sweater and black skirt... and she has that red leather belt with metal circles on it.
It looks like a tambourine got stuck around her waist, swear to God.

Posted: 11/25/07 at 6:42pmI love how , in White Christmas, the same two dancers who appeared in New England, also are her dance partners in NYC. Did they quit too? One of them is the uncredited and very hot George Chakiris, before he did West Side Story.

I heart WHITE CHRISTMAS. Yes it may be hoky and overly sentimental in some spots but the talents of Bing, Danny, Vera and Rosemary are unparalleled. I especially love Clooney. Why didn't she do more films? A great vocalist and she's just so beautiful to look at in this film.
