The daughter has a form of cerebral palsy. Her father is a judge. She had a video camera and captured one of his "disciplinary" assaults on her. Years later she put it online. Read the story, and watch the video, but beware -- it is strong stuff.

Not going to try and watch, but did read the article. What, exactly, does "not as bad as it looks on tape" even mean? Is he claiming . . . well, I'm just not sure what he's claiming.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it is Texas - and they still buy into the "spare the rod, spoil the child" business. Some would probably argue he is well within his rights as a parent, and that the excess force was due to her 'not learning her lesson' before.

I think he ought to be shot.

Coincidentally, they believe in that, too.

Q, I did watch. So I can tell you that it's not a spanking; he's beating the sh*t out of her repeatedly with a wide leather belt. It goes on for a very long time as she screams and screams and screams, and he keeps telling her to turn around and take it. Again and again and agan.

You know: basically a good parent showing love for his child.

That man is a sadist. That was not discipline, that was clearly physical abuse, emotional abuse and terrorism. Too bad she sat on the video for 7 years before releasing it (and understandably so, since she was only 16 years old at the time and obviously in fear for her life), but hopefully, she has compiled much more evidence, especially recent.

Unfortunately, I'm very familiar with Rockport, Texas and spent a LOT of time there in the 80s. It used to be a charming town with a quiet community of fishermen and a well-resected artist colony (I believe Clint Eastwood used to own a home there), but by the mid-90s, it had seriously declined. I still have relatives that live there.

Physical abuse is found everywhere in this country. Every city. Every state. It's not a "Texas thing" like chili without beans. Rockport is a VERY small town, but this could just as easily have taken place in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, or anywhere else, for that matter. And that sort of abuse is often passed down from one generation to the next. It is the choice of the parent to continue it.

The daughter finally gets her revenge. Good for her! I hope Dad gets what he deserves!

I know well that type of punishment, it was prettymuch how my Tsep Dad treated me and my brother growing up. We did end up having to wear long pants and long sleeve shirts in the summer to hide the welts. Left home when I turned 17 and never looked back.

Matt - what you said is obviously true. However, Texas is also one of the minority of states that still allows corporal punnishment in their schools. And, of that minority, is considered amongst the handful of most active practitioners. While it's not possible to paint an entire state with one brush-stroke (for any reason,) it's not exactly unfair to point out an overall acceptance, if not predilection, for said practices.

Corporal punishment in schools is legal in 19 states, the majority of which are in the south. That is true. Domestic corporal punishment is legal in all 50 states. But what is shown in that video is far beyond corporal punishment. I received a spanking when I was a child. I even received one in school. I never received anything like what that girl endured in that video. Now, I believe Texas does have some pretty screwy priorities at times, but this is truly something that could happen anywhere, regardless of school corporal punishment laws.

I grew up in Texas.
I watched this video.
It had very vivid memories of my childhood bubbling to the surface..
My father dealt this to me and then some on a routine basis.. until I was big enough to fight back. I still have a few scars.
FYI, I tried to talk about it and tell when I was a child and the response was always "He's your father. If you do what he says..."
I did move far, far away and when I went to visit family there, I saw where he had punched holes through dry wall... I refuse to go near it again.

Yeah, my mom used to whip me with my dad's big leather belt. I never realized that EVERY kid didn't get "whoopins" like that. I can't even really wrap my head around it now. What must her childhood have been like for her to think that was appropriate?

I know judges are supposed to be (and educated to be) impartial in their sentencing and verdicts, but seeing this makes you wonder about all the decisions he has handed down over his career.


He needs to be disbarred at once.
