The father's defense that she's only getting even because he was cutting her off financially is a pretty stupid statement. Her motivation for postin the video has nothing to do with his behavior in the video. His negative spin only makes him look worse, not her.

I was spanked as a child. I learned not to do the things that I got spankings for. I'm a relatively productive member of society. If I have kids, they will get spanked. Spanking is good for kids.
Do I think that what he did is a spanking? Oh hell no. Do I think he should be disbarred? Very definitely.
I was never spanked as a child. And yet I learned not to do the things I wasn't supposed to do. I'm a productive member of society--and, if I may say so, a very good manager of other people, who never shames or punishes them, and, as a result, I get top-notch performances from them.
I too was never spanked and somehow learned to behave myself. This man should be castrated, and the mother is just as guilty. She not only did nothing to stop it, but she also participated.
The mother has spoken out about the incident, and indicates she was the victim of abuse from her husband. She has apologized to her daughter, and indicated that she is remorseful and ashamed of her conduct. She has also left her husband. If you watch the video, you can almost see her saying in her head "just let him get the one hit in, he will calm down then and it will be over." Her daughter has apparently forgiven her for her role in the abusive family dynamic.
I was spanked as a child - though it was a rarity. I think it happened once or twice, and never with a belt or any other implement. I honestly believe it hurt my parents more than me in those rare times that it happened. But, the threat of spanking was effective. So, while I do not know if I would ever spank my child, I do not think that all parents who spank are evil or bad (as opposed to a beating, which is what this was).
I have read a bit about this judge, and the most appalling thing (other than his conduct) is that he rules in family law cases. He apparently never believes children, and routinely presumes they are lying in court. My understanding is that he will not be allowed to rule on any family law cases, and hopefully, he will be removed from the bench permanently. I personally do not think there will be grounds to disbar him (which is losing your law license), but there are grounds to remove him from the bench (so he is no longer a sitting judge).
