Kinda refreshing to see he didn't really need to throw in a lot of pre 1950s classics just to look smart. I know this is quibbling, but it always irks me when people include plays as books--even if that's how they encountered them... (but he didn't do what so many do and say "The Complete Works of Shakespeare." Truly, I wonder how many of those people actually have read the "complete works..."

This list of a hundred books was posted on his website a couple of years ago, and I told myself I was going to start reading them all - especially the many I'd never even heard of. The only one I actually got around to, though, was Angela Carter's "Nights At The Circus" which I absolutely loved.

How many have you got through Jay? Only read a handful myself. Seems a decent list.
And any list of great books that includes Viz the comic is ok with me. I mean, granted. It is the magazine that hasn't been funny for many a long year now. But it was great.

Angela Carter is great. I read her collection "The Bloody Chamber" in grad school and loved it.

The Bloody Chamber is brilliant--I discovered it as a teen thanks to Neil Jordan's film adaptation Company of Wolves (the one with creepy Angela Lansbury...) A gorgeous new anniversary edition of the collection just came out.
