Why is this being discussed now?

It just seems strange that they are planning Prince Charles's coronation when the Queen seems to be still active and in good health. They would have to plan the Queen's funeral before Charles's coronation.

They would have to plan the Queen's funeral before Charles's coronation.

Why so? They know both are coming, so why not plan in advance?

Maybe Charles won't have a coronation. The ravens could fly away from The Tower of London.

I wouldn't mind the crown passing from Elizabeth to William.

Queen Elizabeth's funeral is already planned. Apparently, the Royals' funerals have code names based on bridges. The Queen Mother's was Tay Bridge; in the movie The Queen, they talk about modeling Diana's funeral on the plans they already had for the Queen Mother.

Queen Elizabeth's funeral code name is London Bridge.

Events like coronations and funerals in the Royal family are planned years in advance. The occasions themselves are huge and the amount of co-ordination they take means that at least the preliminary work has to be done in order to ensure that things run smoothly.

If a monarch like Queen Elizabeth were to die suddenly with no plans in place, how would they manage to put together a funeral for one of the world's most famous public figures at such short notice? The media, the masses of people, all descending on and bringing one of the world's busiest city's grinding to a halt? It would be a logistical nightmare!

It will still be a nightmare (in so many ways) but definitely these events are planned to reduce the chaos. And Charles will not give way to William. ( tho i suspect Camilla will not receive the Crown Matrimonial)

She's made it abundantly clear she won't abdicate and nor should she. Roll on September 2015 when she becomes the longest serving member of the second oldest institution in the western world.

Whether Prince Charles succeeds her will ultimately be decided by Parliament, just as it was in 1642, 1688, 1714 and 1936.
