Dinner Theater

well, I don't get to see much, but the buffet is always good. Here where I live there are like 2 in 50 miles. I saw some pretty wild stuff there. One called 6 degrees of separation was good. what do you all experts think on Dinner theater, good or bad?

I have no problem with dinner theatre as long as people keep their pilaf on their own plate.

A friend of mine used to work in a dinner theatre in Illinois. There was a big sign in the lobby that said THEATER.

You're just figuring this out?

Weird I know, but sound of other people chewing or smacking their food, makes me ill. I have really good hearing and can't stand to eat to close to people I don't know.

I love the issues of others. Anything to deflect the light from my own. I don't have any problem watching people eat, though.

I hate this thread, though. It's all out of whack because that picture is huge.

I acted in several shows at dinner theaters. They were all horrible experiences. The patrons were more interested in the meals they were eating and in some cases were pretty close to drunk. Oh yeah, they were laughing, but in all the wrong places.

The backstage area really didn't exist and I remember having to do quick changes by the steam table in the kitchen.

As for the quality of the shows, they were definitely "wanting". I played Lazar Wolf in a dinner theater FIDDLER. The production was so scaled down that I held the canopy at Motel and Tzeitel's wedding. Huh?

Never again.

My parents managed, acted and directed at a dinner theatre in Omaha in the 1970's. The owner was a real cheapskate. I was in high school at the time and worked there as a prop boy/busboy/dishwasher. When we did FIDDLER, two of the busboys held the wedding canopy, and later played the Russian soldiers who trashed the place. Since we had no lines, we were considered "extras" and didn't count in the equity/non-equity ratio.

The playbill had the slogan "Great Food! Great Show!" on the cover. Actually, the food was pretty damned good. The theatre was in-the-round, with several tiers of tables, and the buffet up at the top level. Invaiably, some old lady would be walking from the buffet to her seat, and a cherry tomato would roll off her salad plate and onto the stage. We always had to check before the show started.

I recall that during a dinner theater performance of SOUTH PACIFIC, the prop crew placed Billis' "boar's tooth bracelet" close to the grill. As it was made of wax, it melted and could not be used at that performance. Luckily the restaurant had lots of candles and I heated some up, bent them into shape and we were able to go on without difficulty.

I have seen a lot of Broadway actors perform @ the Carousel Dinner Theatre in my hometown. I even saw Jennifer Hope Wills in Jekyll and Hyde.

I've only been to one dinner theatre, it was in Maryland. They don't start the show until the meals are finnished and the plates are removed, keeping the audiences attention on the show. Dessert comes at intermission.

The college I used to go to has a dinner theatre every year... the food sucks, but the shows are pretty good.

Last year (year before that?) was Lonestar and Laundry in Bourbon. Great fun.
