Walt Disney Pictures has revealed this first photo of princess Tiana in the studio's traditionally-animated The Princess and the Frog, coming to theaters in 2009. The movie is written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and features the music of Randy Newman.
A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz -- New Orleans -- "The Princess and the Frog" will introduce the newest Disney princess, Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.

Hopefully they can hire all their amazing animators back. I know Glen Keane is back at the studio, directing Rapunzel. I really hope to see Andreas Deja, James Baxter, Dave Brewster, Ken Duncan, Eric Goldberg, Dominique Monfrey and the rest of the gang's work on screen again. I used to idolize their work so much.

Well she can't be black AND fat! Disney can only take one step forward at a time.

this makes me excited:
"soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn."
Like a mix between, The Rescuers, The Little Mermaid and Song of the South.

Akiva, I know, I know...but it's still a shame. But forget fat, I'd have been satisfied with a healthy "normal."
And yes mateo, it sounds ripe for some good ole swamp scenes. And speaking of Song of the South, when was the last time you saw that! Alas, things that will never make it to DVD...

I haven't seen Song of the South in quite a few years.
I used to own it on UK VHS.

It looks beautiful and Anika Noni Rose is going to be fantastic, but why, oh WHY did they replace Alan Menken with... Randy Newman.

No Mateo, it's not.
Just Google Song Of The South DVD and you get several options.

I love the fact they didn't try to make her look white, with flowing black hair for the Barbie version. She looks African-American, and that's great.

So excited for Anika Noni Rose.
I agree re Alan Menken, he should have gotten this gig. I loved his score for ENCHANTED.
