I wonder why Disney chose not to have Maleficent turn into an old hag and actually work the spinning wheel as the traditional story has her do... I wonder why they chose to have the floating spinning wheel descend and then just have a creepy voice over of Maleficent entice Aurora to the wheel... Any thoughts? Btw I think that scene is by far one of Disney's creepiest scenes ever... Gives me the spooks... The music, the eeriness of the staircase etc.

I have no idea, but today I saw a trailer for Maleficent (with Angelina Jolie) and it looked incredible beyond words.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Maybe they didn't want the film to be too much like 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' where the villain used a disguise to trick the princess into doing something that will make her fall asleep. After all, Walt had Snow White awake from her slumber by a kiss rather than a piece of the apple falling out of her throat after her coffin dropped.

Probably because, as you said, they designed it in that deliciously spooky and creepy way. I don't think having Maleficent as an old hag would have added to that creepiness, and I think it would have detracted somewhat from the great appearance of power she keeps throughout the movie. Maleficent don't turn into ugly old hags, she transforms into DRAGONS, etc. etc.
