It's a very funny show... catholic school kids. I saw a community theater production a long time ago. I remember thinking back then that unless you went to catholic school, a lot of the jokes wouldn't be nearly as funny.

Harsh! re: Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?

I know it was big with community theaters in the early 90s. Nothing spectacular... I can't imagine it on B'way. For for amateurs/schools, it's a good show.

i agree DD. it would probably be great in schools and smaller venues. my friend Walter saw it on broadway in one of its 15 previews and said it was horrible.

From Samuel French:

Gleeful audiences flocked to see this show in Chicago (where it became that city's longest running show), in Philadelphia (where it broke attendance records during its two runs) and in cities across the country. Focusing on eight children during their Catholic elementary and high school education in the 1950s, it captures the funniest aspects of youthful growing pains and the trying moments of adolescence. Every number tickles the funny bone of anyone who ever went to school, public or private. It is a delightful musical for schools. "Very funny."---Philadelphia Inquirer. "The audience ... was beside itself with glee."---Philadelphia Daily News. "A divine comedy."---Main Line Times. "Crisp and snappy."---Catholic Standard and Times. "You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy it."---Jewish Times.

I did this show in high school (community theatre). It was a lot of fun and has some good songs. You can listen to the preview clips on Barnes and Noble's website.

Isnt that a line from Grease? I've only done it twice, but I can't remember...

I've done the show (Virginia). I can't picture it doing well on Broadway, but it's sort of like Grease and Oklahoma and things like that in the sense that you have to have fun doing it, or the audiences won't enjoy it either. And I agree that the jokes are probably funnier if you went to Catholic schools ("but we Catholic school kids get Saint's days off!".

There are the kids and the adults (the nuns and a priest). It starts out in grade school, follows them into high school, and ends with a reunion. I can give a much more detailed description, but I bet google will help you out on that! But, if you have any specific questions, send me a PM.

I saw the Broadway version and enjoyed it, but it was so long ago that I hardly remember it.

I do recall reading the original novel which was very funny.
