Do you have food delivered?

I thought this article is very interesting. I'm ashamed to admit that I don't think too much about what goes on behind the scenes of food delivery.....just that I my food hot and in decent time. And I must admit, there has been one or two occasions where I have complained when those criteria have not been met. This will really make me think twice.....

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

My Chinese/Sushi delivery guy has a car. I'm totally cutting back on his tip.

A click for life.

how do you know how much to tip until you have eaten the order to see if you are satisfied with the level of service? i always tell the delivery person to come back in an hour and i'll have the tip ready - IF i think they deserve a tip. if i don't think they deserve a tip, then i mug 'em.

A few months back, we ordered Chinese food from an expensive place by us (not our usual) and waited an hour and a half so we ordered from someone else, and cancelled the original order telling them NOT to send the delivery...the did anyway and we wouldnt let him up...he kept buzzing and pleading...it was pitiful.
Think he was on a boat for home the next day?

I'm a chronic over-tipper. It's not that I'm generous, I just can't do simple math.
Edit: Yes, Doodle, I do.

"how do you know how much to tip until you have eaten the order to see if you are satisfied with the level of service?"
true (and I know a good part of your response wasn't serious, at least I hope it wasn't) but aren't you tipping for DELIVERY? That is, how long it takes to get to you and if the food still hot? You can usually tell if the food is hot (well, I can). If there is an issue with the order, i.e. they forgot something, I usually take it up with the resturant since it seems most times the delivery people are given the bags and the address and that's it.
P.S. I am also a chronic overtipper

Having worked for tips much of my early working life (no, the tip jar was not on my nightstand!) I too am a chronic overtipper, unless the service was lousy or with too much of a bad attitude.
AND I try to take into account when someone is clearly new to the job.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:36amWow that article is an eye-opener! I know in Chicago, delivery men almost always have to have cars, they are sometimes paid per delivery or tips only and they have to buy $3+ a gallon gas. And I've heard horror stories of Drivers being forced to pay for food that is refused by customers. One refused pizza and you've wroekd for free all night.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:40amI over tip deliverymen all the time... what percentage do you generally give?

20 percent and then I round up to the dollar.

I also overtip for delivery. I feel like they are really providing a service. I'm either too lazy to cook or too lazy to get dressed and go pick it up myself, so these people are really doing me a favor. And in this heat, man I give at least 20%.

I tip nicely because the delivery person has to carry my food from the restaurant to my apt. Sometimes they have to climb 5 flights of steps to deliver, the bags may be heavy, the weather most likely sucks because that's when people order out the most, etc.
My tipping has nothing to do with the food. That's not the delivery guy's fault.

Yeah, I always tip at least 20%. I wouldn't even attempt to figure out 15%.
