Do you think that Jamie Foxx.................

Posted: 2/2/05 at 5:26pmwould have gotten so much hype for his performance had Ray Charles been alive? I guess Ray, picked a good time to die because almost like a month after he died the movie came out. I think that if he was still living, it wouldn't have been as big a deal. Any thoughts??????????

Beaver: MTV was OBVIOUSLY joking about him choosing his time to die...obviously.
MTV: I think that Jamie Foxx would have gotten the same recognition, but the movie as a whole probably wouldn't have gotten so much recognition. The movie just isn't that good.
#4re: Do you think that Jamie Foxx.................
Posted: 2/2/05 at 5:43pmNo he's definitely not. But he's the best part of that movie, which still isn't saying a lot.

Posted: 2/2/05 at 6:34pmYeah, I was just joking. But still, I can't help but wonder if his recent death added to some of the movies hype. Maybe not, look at Coal Miner's Daughter, but that may be a different story...I haven't seen Ray.

Posted: 2/2/05 at 7:03pmYou should see RAY. Although I don't think it's a very good movie, I learned a lot about Ray Charles that I didn't know, and there are a few tearjerker moments with Ray's mother and younger brother.

Actually MTVMann, I get what your saying. I think he is going head to head with Leo for the Oscar this year. The thing is I think he would still have gotten a nomination, but wouldn't have so much hype.
I do agree with you. I don't mean this in a way to disrepect Ray Charles, I don't think this question was meant in that way.
Also as a side note. Katherine Hepburn died this year as well (or was it last year?) anyway Cate Blachett is up for an Oscar for playing Kate the Great.

Posted: 2/3/05 at 1:25amI think it's interesting that people get up in arms about performers being dubbed in movie musicals, yet no one complains that Jamie Foxx is lip synching to Ray Charles' voice.
#11re: Do you think that Jamie Foxx.................
Posted: 2/3/05 at 6:27pmHe is Lip Synching????? And he got the nomination and maybe a win........it was the lip synching that cost Natalie Wood a nomination for West Side Story, something I think she could have won.

Posted: 2/3/05 at 6:56pmTheres a difference between lip synching and being dubbed. Which did he do? If he lip synched to his own vocals, oh well, every musical does that. If not, well, I'm sure if I agree with him being dubbed. Was it Ray's actual singing in the movie?
#13re: Do you think that Jamie Foxx.................
Posted: 2/3/05 at 6:58pmIt was Ray actually singing. IT makes complete sense that Foxx would lipsink it - Ray is a real person why not use his amazing music? It made it more realistic.

Ray Charles died June 11, 2004
The movie "Ray" was released in theaters October 29, 2004

Posted: 2/4/05 at 9:07pmI think that most people fail to see the line between Foxx's performance and the overall quality of the film. Foxx, and all of the supporting actresses, are what make this movie worth seeing. Certainly not the screenplay, or the inexlicably nominated work of Taylor Hackford.

I agree with that. The same holds true with the TV movie "Me And My Shadows: The Life of Judy Garland". You don't mess wuth greatness, and if you try, you're probably going to fail.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 12:14amOn a somewhat-related note, did Ray Charles see the completed film? I know he was involved in its making.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 12:15amI think it's worth the hype. Who knows what's up with these people that say it's mediocre? Whatever... excellent film, excellent performance. Oscar worthy.

Ray did hear the movie before his death. In response to the movie he said something like, "That's the truth man." From my understanding the movie had been made for a while. It was listed on imdb for some quite a bit of time.
Jamie had an excellent year with three breakout performances. I think he's getting the hype because it's a breakout year for him. I mean, this guy starred in "The Great White Hype", "Booty Call", and "Breakin All The Rules." He's done a COMPLETE 360.

Jamie Foxx said on his episode of INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO that he did BOOTY CALL strictly for the paycheck; he just needed to pay the bills.
I'm glad he admitted that.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 4:41pmRAY definitely isn't a bad movie, but it just lacks in so many aspects. It is so poorly directed and put together that I can only imagine how great it would have been if if had a better director and writer. The cast really is superb - Ray's mother (I don't know her name) was brilliant and completely broke my heart. It is definitely a rewarding movie and even slightly moving - I learned so much about Ray that even if the movie was crap, atleast I got that out of it. It's great that he was banned from performing in the state of Georgia as long as it was segregated - then years later he was offically welcomed back - that was so moving and uplifting. I loved the flashback moments, but other than that thought it was very flat and dry. Foxx was good, as I said, but nothing beats DiCaprio and Depp this year. Unfortunately, he probably will.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 6:33pmI'm pretty sure that Jamie did his own singing in RAY. No lip-synching.

Posted: 2/5/05 at 6:36pmNo, he definitely sang along to old Ray Charles recordings. Trust me.
