Does anyone use Zipcar?

Nope, but I think it's a fantastic idea.

I'd just be worried about availability during the summer months...

I use Flex Car. It's great! It costs $9 per hour in San Francisco and there are plenty of locations. The cost includes gas and insurance and unlimited mileage. They also have specials where you can rent for one calendar day for $70 or for a weekend, Friday at 5pm until Monday at 8am for $140. With the cost of gas these days this is a great deal!

That seems to be the issue. That and cleanliness. One thing I like about getting a rental car is that it's always so clean and new. Some of the reviews I have read about Zipcar say that a lot of times people leave them very dirty.

With Flex Car if the car is dirty, the person who leaves it that way has to pay a fine. I have been able to get a car every time I've wanted one.

My friend lives in San Fran and uses that too. I just don't know if I should commit. I wonder about the availability of cars if I decide at the last minute.

They have a lot of locations in SF. I've always been able to get a car near my neighborhood and when I've scrolled around the location list, there are always cars available. We have Flex Car, City Car Share, and Zip Car here. They are pretty popular and I know people who use them all and I've never heard anyone say they couldn't get a car when they wanted one.

I use Zipcar in Boston and love it. There's always an available car nearby, even at very short notice (i.e., if I need a car immediately). The cars have always been very clean in my experience.
