Posted: 1/26/08 at 2:37pmThere are not expiration dates on shampoo bottles (obviously because it's not edible) however do the chemicals lose their effect after a while?

Hahaha!
It's probably at least 6 months old. I forgot I had it and started using it recently.

Oh, I was thinking you found some shampoo in the back of your linen closet that had been there for 6 years, or something like that.
6 months... I'm sure you're fine.

Posted: 1/26/08 at 6:59pmI am certain they will put expiration dates on shampoo soon- to get you to buy more in cases like this. I recently noticed an expiration date on a bottle of water.

Actually, the plastic from the bottles eventually leeches into the water. It takes a while, but that is why they had to put an expiration date on it.
Shampoo is not an issue unless it uses real milk, or some other degradable substance.

Nope. Plastic doesn't migrate and if it did, it's non-toxic- you could actually eat a bottle and survive:
Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, has become the plastic packaging of choice for many food products, particularly beverages like bottled water and carbonated soft drinks. This is due in part to its inherent properties that are well suited for lightweight, large-capacity and shatter-resistant containers. Like any indirect food additive, the scientific testing of PET is based on two key principles: establishing that there is a minimal amount of transfer of substances between the plastic packaging and the food and establishing that any substances that may transfer from the plastic to the food do not pose a risk to human health.
One word, Benjamin: Plastics.

Posted: 1/26/08 at 7:41pmI was told that the water would just start to taste like plastic. Not that it was hazardous to ones health just that it wouldn't taste good anymore.

Posted: 1/26/08 at 7:50pmWell you have to remember- their goal is to get you to buy more water- that's why there are huge "DO NOT REFILL!" warnings on bottled water. If you refill it (and you certainly can) that's one less bottle they sell.

Posted: 1/26/08 at 7:51pmI think some brands of water taste like plastic. Like Aquafina.

"Nope. Plastic doesn't migrate"
Plastic degrades. Not only does it affect the water directly, but it also becomes less capable of keeping out strong odors the water could pick up.
My sister is a chemical engineer who used to work with PET. She told me that when I first scoffed at dating on waters and pops.

I think DG was referring to Shampoo.
You're a witty one, DG!
