Does the GOP even read the Constitution?

This week, the GOP chose Susan Collins, Senator from Maine, to give their weekly address. It's about as patently false and misleading as it could possibly be, both on the facts of the event in question (the xmas bombing attempt) as well as the Constitution. Something that needs to point out to the GOP and the vast majority of the media: the Constitution applies to EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTY, NOT JUST CITIZENS. Its words are chosen very carefully, and in almost every case, the word 'person' is used. There are some instances where 'citizen' is used, but not when talking about rights. Think about it. If the Constitution didn't apply to all, we could enslave foreigners and incarcerate tourists without trial.
In addition to being wrong on the Constitution, she gets the facts of the case wrong. The suspect, despite being Mirandized several times and having legal representation, is cooperating and providing intelligence.
Every word is false

"Constitution? There's a Constitution?"
Apparently, only when it's convenient.

Torture is much more about vengeance than information gathering.
I wonder if some of those who support torture were picked on as children...
Even more ironic, the shoe bomber was immediately mirandized, and the Bush DOJ supported the exact path Obama is following.
For the junk bomber, his family is urging him to cooperate, and he is. Specifically because they believe in the US court system.
Collins looks like a moron... but what else is new.

Trust me, you really don't want to see that.
But, if waterboarding means downing a few Sapphires' on the rocks with a martini olive, it would work.

Let's see, the Democrats are trying to pass a bill that forces everyone to buy health insurance or go to jail.
(Gothampc frantically searches his copy of the Constitution).
Can someone please point out to me where the Constitution says that the government has the right to force people to buy government sponsored health insurance?

I don't think any version of any bill sends anyone to jail, though I could be wrong. I think there would be a fine, sort of like driving a car without insurance.
The Constitution grants the legislature to write laws; the judicial branch could determine if a law is unconstitutional. Since I haven't seen any state-level auto insurance law be declared unconstitutional, I doubt a healthcare bill would, though with SCOTUS, who knows?

"I don't think any version of any bill sends anyone to jail, though I could be wrong."
“The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years,” House Republicans said in a statement Friday.

Posted: 2/4/10 at 12:25pmHmm...I agree that the current Health Care Reform bill SUCKS. But I'd have to research that myself first...these are the same people who told us there would be death panels.

Madbrian--that's the issue of the "madates" without a public option.
Under both the Senate bill, the mandate is still there--a fine and a jail term if you fail to purchase insurance. A public option would have given those people an affordable option.
Obama beat up Hillary during the primary debates because her plan had mandates without. Now this plan has those same mandates without the public option.
It's not good Democratic politics.

Hmmm...so, if we send someone to jail for failing to purchase healthcare, then they get free healthcare in jail???
I'm an advocate of a strong public option, and I agree that a mandate without one weakens any plan.
