Does Dominique Swain still act? After re-reading Lolita for a class, I revisited the film version featuring her in the title role. It was the first time I'd watched it in a decade, when it was first shown on Showtime, and was simply blown away by how natural and effortless her performance was. I started to think, and couldn't name another movie I remember seeing her in.

Anybody know what she's up to?

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Dominique Swain

"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"

Same page here. I think the Adrian Lyne LOLITA is one of the most underappreciated adaptations, so true to the spirit of the book, and at times, the letter, full of vivid period details, and yes, an extraordinary perfofrmance by Swain. I think the film was ahead of its time. It was rather shamefully neglected. I saw it at the Lincoln Plaza almost as a private screening. Even the score -- that one plucked string iin the theme -- is just tonally so right.

The scene where Irons' Humbert (brilliant) tells her about her mom's death -- is that not wonderful?

Roger Ebert:

"Dominique Swain is a natural talent. She has a kind of natural elan which makes it seem that she's completely herself."

Re: Lyne's LOLITA: I'm not sure, but I do belive the film was released in NY and LA before the Showtime airing. I think perhaps there was some awards season hope -- because I recall seeing it in late autumn, opposite Lincoln Center on a blustery day. The hope was leaning toward Irons, remember? He may have had some also-rans with film critics groups that year... But then, yes, it did land on Showtime. I taped it off, but in a couple of moves seem to have lost it. It doesn't turn up in DVD bins. I'll check to see if Amazon has it.

The DVD is out of print, but Amazon has some very affordable used copies. I think the cheapest is around $10.
