Songwriter Dory Previn died yesterday at 86. Her obit is in today's NY Times. Before marrying Andre Previn she wrote using the name Dory Langdon.
Three time Oscar nominee, but best known as the lyricist to the "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" and also "You're Gonna Hear From Me" from Inside Daisy Clover, she also wrote very personal songs from her own experiences.
In a memoir called Midnight Baby she wrote of her deeply disturbed father. She wrote songs about the break-up of her marriage to Andre Previn (which had more than a little to do with Mia Farrow). There were also songs about a very public nervous breakdown too. She wrote from her heart.
Dory wrote a musical called something like "Mary C. Brown and the Hollywood Sign" starring Elizabeth Ashley which opened in LA, but didn't continue in a planned move to Broadway. Some of the songs are on her solo albums.
If you can find the sheet music to "Second Chance" from the film Two For The Seesaw (1962), it is a lovely jazz song with a simple straightforward lyric, and it is devilishly hard to sing. It is one of her Oscar nominees. Music is by Andre Previn.

Sorry to hear this. I found her songs fascinating- folksy but jazzy and w a dark funny streak.

TRUE DAT!
I always wondered what she thought when Farrow went thru the Woody Allen/ Soon Yee sturm und drang. Karma?

If karma does exist, I'm pretty sure Mia Farrow is in the black.
