The Senate Armed Services Committee heard testimony Tuesday that increasing the size of the Army and Marine Corps may not resolve severe and growing personnel problems. There was even talk of returning to the draft to fill the ranks.

“It is better to take a smaller force than to lower your standards,” said Lawrence Korb, a former senior Pentagon personnel official now affiliated with the Center for Defense Information and the Center for American Progress.

“The current use of ground forces in Iraq represents a complete misuse of the all-volunteer military,” he said.

The all-volunteer force was never designed for a protracted ground war, but that is exactly what it faces, he said.

“If the United States is going to have a significant component of its ground forces in Iraq over the next five, 10, 15 or 30 years, then the responsible course is for the president and those supporting this open-ended and escalated presence in Iraq to call for reinstating the draft.”
Experts: Force increases may not be enough

Tell! Tell! Tell!

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I'm not sure why supporters of this very ongoing war wouldn't also be supporters of a draft? I mean, if they really believe that the cause is a righteous one. Why NOT ask for sacrifice from the next "Greatest Generation" if they truly believe they are doing the right thing?

There is going to be UPRISING if they do this. This country isn't like how it was many years ago where people were gung ho about going to war when our government said so, because back then, they trusted the government with all of their being and thought it to be a privelage to fight for the government. Now, we live in different times where most people don't even know what's going on in the world and they do not trust our government anymore. Like I said, UPRISING if this ever happens. And you can quote me on it.

Which begs the question: Why is there no UPRISING (as you put it) over all these things that such a non-"trustworthy" government does in our names? Is it somehow okay if we're not "forced" to physically take part? We just pay for it and placidly sit back with our iPods to listen to the new Kelly Clarkson song?

I say BRING BACK THE DRAFT if this war is really the right thing to do.

I'm at the gym the other night... yeah, I go.

Anyway, I'm in the whirlpool with some kid (male) and we get into a debate about the Bush Adminstration and the war.

He is pro.. I am against...

We go on and it is getting heated.. I don't mean the temperature of the water. Everyone is listening to us.. and then it occurs to me and I ask..

"Well, Mr. Patriotic, if you believe in this conflict so much why aren't you over there fighting?"

Mr. Flag-Waver got RED..stepped out of the pool and walked away.

I think I might pick up some enlistment applications and carry them with me in case I see him there again.

the key phrase there is "a significant component." if we have more than 15,000 troops in iraq in 5 years i'll be flabbergasted. that would not represent "a significant component" and would render this argument and headlines like this specifically calculated to scare draft age posters (despite the roar against this exact type of fear mongering) moot.

the reason we won't have a draft is that it's taken years to build the greatest fighting force in the history of mankind. a draft would completely destroy it. which is exactly why some people (not implying that anyone here is like that) are specifically in favor of a reinstatement of the draft.

Bingo! And the attitude towards gay marriage is the exact opposite.

BFB, Thank you so much for asking that question. As a mom whose son is about to grauate college this May (a 3.6 average BTW) he is Air Force ROTC, I know he'll be heading over.
So why aren't these supporters of all this craziness down at the recruting office?

Mominator, you must be so proud!

You'd think the young republican clubs on college campuses would be empty from all the boys and girls lining up to enlist.. but thats not the case is it?

Mominator, I say a rosary everynight. I'll think of your son.

It a draft comes about I would bet there would be a whole lot of people claiming to be gay. After all if they don't ask and you tell, you're out.

Thanks BFB! I am very proud but very scared. The officer who is traing him for her job, has to do via e-mail. This is because she is being sent over to Iraq for several months. So she is training him to do her job (which is in Public Affairs) She is being sent because her next in command is coming home from Iraq.

Once again thank you for the prayers, they really do mean a lot.

BFB, DEFINITELY get enlisting materials and keep them in your gym bag (you know, the bag with the Twinkies and Coke cans).

And WHEN you see this guy (because you must see him again) PLEASE give us an update. Little things like these give me joy in a world in which I am overwhelmed.

Many of the supporters I know are. Mainly because their children aren't the ones who will be drafted.

I would like to know how many people on this board would be eligible if a draft did come into effect.

I'd be eligible in about three-four years. Which is why I disagree with a draft. I don't support the war, and I won't fight in it.
