Though Wiener's explanation makes general story sense, the Brian Batt character had one of the most arresting through-lines, and could easily have resurfaced, via sexual-romantic entanglement or business dealings. It's very SOPRANOS to let him go when he's beloved, and it breaks with the daytime soap tradition of holding onto anyone an audience roots for... Still, much more could've been done with this tortured character. Too bad.
I'm not happy with this decision. I agree that he absolutely could have been used in many ways that would have highlighted the prejudice even more. His talents could have been used under the table (no pun intended!). A rival company could have picked him up and he creates a hit campaign that could have been Sterling Cooper's success. Etc etc etc.
Perhaps he will be back down the road. And it's always possible that this is merely formality--that he will be back as a "guest star". Here's hoping.
Oh no! I didn't know they were dumping Sal! I loved his character...
I was going to search for our Mad Men thread to make a comment but I'm glad you posted this. I'm sorry to see Sal go. I feel like there was a lot more story left to tell!
Has anyone else heard grumblings that Weiner wasn't a big fan of Batt?
Don't forget, there is still another gay character on Mad Men...one who was out. Kurt. I'll never forget how shocked I was when he simply declared his sexuality in the break room. Perhaps he will end up at Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce.
Sal had no shot working at SCDP since Lucky Strike's account joined them. Still it would have been nice to see his character progress. We still saw Joan in bits and pieces last season not at the work-place.
I hope we actually do see characters change with the times or even new characters introduced would be good.

Too bad that the last we saw of his character was entering the Ramble but never coming out.
