Ebert's review...

Posted: 11/23/05 at 1:15pmOh, fer Chrissakes, people it's not a flawless work. The clunky lyrics can be painful, the characters are stereotypes, the "hip" music sounds like Mr. Roboto-era Styx, and no, people do not spring back to life when they have AIDS. No doubt the movie only amplifies these problems.

Posted: 11/23/05 at 1:26pmOh, I agree the show is severly flawed and I am positive that the movie will have flaws as well (What movie is 100% perfection) and I could care less what the critics say (except for ones that make stupid comments). I am going today after work and seeing this for myself and let that be that. I was just asking Priest that question because I just wasn't sure how he meant it.

Having talked to Priest about the show, I can tell you that there was no sarcasm there.

I didn't mean that sarcastically.
Sure, I can see the movie maybe being good, but there are so many flaws in the stage show that would prevent the movie from being anything more than just good.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

I can always depend on Margo. Alright, Priest thanks for clearing that up.

That Stephanie Zacharek excerpt was wonderful, Borstalboy. :)
And there's still good movie critics in the world, even if Maslin (who I loved) isn't writing anymore. I like the Times' Manohla Dargis and Slate's David Edelstein, for a start.
And I give Ebert credit for the way he handled that whole mess with Vincent Gallo and The Brown Bunny.

"Nor do I appreciate the comment that because he suffered a stroke his opinions should be devalued."
I thought he had thyroid cancer. Did he also have a stroke?

More Zacharek:
"When you're living in America at the end of the millennium," sings one character earnestly, in a different number, after he's tried to sell out and discovers the world of actually making a living just doesn't suit him, "you are what you own." Truer words were never sung, at least not since Florence Henderson donned a dirndl in "Song of Norway."
I wasn't sure a movie musical could be worse than last year's styrofoam-and-gilt swan-boat travesty "Phantom of the Opera," but I'm afraid "Rent" proves me wrong.
Later Dawson, who has the hots for Pascal and hopes to jolt him out of the funk he's been in since his junkie girlfriend committed suicide, scoots down on all fours and sings, "They say that I have the best ass below 14th Street." The evidence, as it twitches before us, is irrefutable.

What's with all this RENT fuss overshadowing THE PRODUCERS? I'm excited about both, but I'm looking forward to THE PRODUCERS a LOT more.

Posted: 11/24/05 at 1:48pmWell, THE PRODUCERS at least has the advantage of already having been a film before. But will Lane/Broderick erase the sweet memories of Mostel/Wilder?

It sounds like they have.
Broderick already has a supporting actor award under his belt, and the film hasn't even opened in theatres yet.
And Lane is Lane...
