It's the theme of this election for Republicans -- don't offer solutions or ideas, just 24/7 character assassinations. The Washington Post took on McCain's recent sliming effort, as did the NY Times. What they fail to consider is the price for winning under such circumstances. As if magically all rancor will disappear, as everyone "reaches across the aisle" in a show of unity. Why, that nasty terrorist associating Obama is really a wonderful American ... NOW ... whose support I need because 50% of the population voted for him." It's all based on the supposition that the power-grab itself is worth any strategy to attain the prize, always oblivious that after election day, the country will be in the same general mindset.
This year more than any other, Republicans seem to believe the only way to hold on to what little they have left after Bush is to scorch the earth. It's deeply cynical, and about as far removed from "country first" as is possible.
