She gets a statue in her honor.

Posted: 6/16/05 at 6:06pmI think I tend to agree with those who are concerned that it glosses over a very real and bad part of our history. Not that I would in ANY way compare the events, but it's kind of like putting a statue of Bob Crane at Auschwitz.

re: Elizabeth Montgomery#5
Posted: 6/16/05 at 6:23pmIt does seem to kind of trivialize the Salem Witch Trials. But who would recognize a statue of Arthur Miller?

Thanks, Marquise.
Plum, you're right about that. I surprised there's not a statue of Charlton Heston in Egypt.

It was 1692, it's time to let go. My favorite Hollywood person, ever!

Convince - on a gut level I agree with you completely. But I do wonder what exactly the time limit is on recognizing tragic events or societal choices that shaped history. Especially ones that were fueled by thoughts and feelings that to some extent exist today - some 300+ years later.
And by the way, I adore Elizabeth, as well!

As I recall it, Bewitched has an episode or two set in Salem.

They actually did do a couple of episodes set there. It would probably be impossible to do a show concerning witches and not have it come up sooner or later.
I have absolutely NO issue with her being honored - few have deserved it more out of the performing community. I just think it raises some interesting questions, that's all.

Posted: 6/16/05 at 8:14pmHey, I loved that TV show. It just seems in questionable taste to honor it in that particular way. Why not do it in Montomogery's home town or something?
re: Elizabeth Montgomery#14
Posted: 6/16/05 at 8:19pmWell, actually it makes no sense. Like they did with MTM and The Honeymooners, they should have placed it in the town in which the show took place, Westport, Connecticut.

"Not that I would in ANY way compare the events, but it's kind of like putting a statue of Bob Crane at Auschwitz."
The difference is that people approach Auschwitz with a due amount of respect and reverence. Have you been to Salem? It's like Marilyn Manson's version of a theme park. The town has cashed in on the witch trials and have played up the occult aspect for tourists. A statue of Samantha Stevens should fit right in.
I actually feel it's Elizabeth Monthgomery who is being slighted in all of this. She deserves a better tribute, one that isn't obviously aimed at promoting a cheesy movie and a town that has sold out it's history to a bunch of Goth kids and fat assed tourists in bright pink polyester shorts.

Posted: 6/26/05 at 7:10amHas anyone read the Elizabeth biography by Rita E.Piro? Amazon are selling it for $33, which seems kind of expensive. Is it any good?

The statue is a publicity gimmick for the "TV Land" cable channel. They also have one of Andy Griffith and little Ronny Howard heading to the fishing hole in North Carolina, and one of Mary Tyler Moore throwing her beret in the air in downtown Minneapolis.

I would just like to add in my love for her.
I agree with orion, I think she deserves something better than some commercial statue for one show in a town that shaped one of America's not-so-great moments in history. She's getting a star? GOOD FINALLY
