They have it dead on. I certainly think it's one of the most uncertain seasons as well.

The only one I don't think will happen is Laura Linney, The Savages.

But, more seriously, I think there were some fantastic roles for women this year: namely the ones that fit the cliches best mentioned. Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Laura Linney....I'd give any one of them an Oscar in a second for their work in their respective films.

After last year, which featured spectacular performances of a wide range from women (of different colors even!), it's just such a letdown.

Especially when you think of both Streep and Mirren's performances last year. They both played exceedling powerful women who, whatever other deals with the devil they made, did not give up their femininity.

Best Actress will be between Marion & Julie. I personally, want Marion to win. Her performance was beyond extraordinary!

Robbiej, what do you mean when you say that it's disappointingly white? What does one's race have to do with determining a nomination or a win?

What I mean is that films featuring strong, award-worthy roles for people of color were few and far between this year. It has less to do with the awards and more to do with the fact that these movies aren't getting made regularly.

Although it might not be the strongest year in recent memory for women in front of the camera, it IS notable that this may (and most likely will) be the first year women outnumber men in the Best Original Screenplay race.

That may be true. But, that's not the Academy's fault. You can't nominate something that never came to be.

I just saw my EW, and boy oh boy, PTA is just getting more and more handsome the older he gets.

i'm thrilled he may finally getting this kind of much deserved attention.

The only race that is interesting to me at all is Best Actress, the others seems to be pretty much the usual suspects (Best Actor, anyways). I also like the Best Supporting Actress race as well.

I'm not faulting the Academy...I'm using these presumptive nominees (especially in comparison to last year's) to make a comment on the movie business in general. Really, do I need to spell it out this much?

No, you don't need to spell it out. Every year is different. Some years the films and the choices are fantastic. Other years, it's a little slower, a little less diverse. Remember a few years back when women in films dominated the Oscars..........."Chicago," "Far From Heaven" and "The Hours" were all in the same year?

Nicole Kidman was wonderful in "The Hours." I personally wanted Julianne Moore to win for "Far From Heaven." Many felt that when Nicole won for "The Hours," it was her makeup award from "Moulin Rouge" when she was the expected winner. Halle Berry won that year.

It will be interesting to see how SW does when the nominations are announced week after next. I'm sure that Johnny Depp will get a nod. And, I'm sure that the film will get quite a few nominations......art direction, costumes, cinematography, etc...

Renee Z won The Golden Globe that year in the Musical/Comedy category for "Chicago." I like the fact that The Golden Globes has 2 categories........Drama and Musical/Comedy. Interesting how Marion C was nominated in the Musical/Comedy category and not in the Drama category this year.

Except for Johnny. They presented it as "The Johnny Depp Show" so I'm not surprised.

Tim and Helena have a chance but not a huge one... although I would love to see Helena recognized for her work. I just don't "predict" that she will be.

It's certainly still a contender for a nod in many categories. Just not a favorite.

Depp will get a nod and it'll get some design nods. The others are possible, but not likely.

they constantly do that--award people a year (or two or three) after they should have won.

Crowe winning for Gladiator instead of The Insider is another.

that's why I think you can engrave best actor with ddl. not only is he exquisite, he's due from his gangs of new york loss.
