Weird to realize the only professional baseball game I ever saw in New York was one between the Mets and Cubs in the summer of '69 at Shea. We were from Connecticut not New York, so I perversely rooted for the underdog Cubs which I guess would have included Mr. Banks, rather than the hometown team.
Of course the Cubs lost, so I stayed a Cubs fan for a good while after that. 20 years later I caught another couple of Cubs games in Chicago. They still always lost. Nice to have consistency. RIP Ernie Banks.
I did not attend a game last season. I have had a set of tickets since the 90's and last year I did not participate in the package. I hope that the new manager and the off season additions will make it a better year.
Last game at Wrigley I saw Banks walking between the suites greeting fans. We yelled at him and he waived and smiled, always a pleasant fellow!
