I have a midterm coming up in which I was given eight essay topis. Four will appear on the exam and I will have to answer two. I suck at statistics, so how many do I need to be familiar with?
Thanks

Posted: 10/16/06 at 11:52amEducation is not about passing tests it's about learning the material. Why would you want to waste your time sitting through a class and not learn as much as you can?

Oh, God, JoeKv99. Like you (and the rest of the world, really) never ever tried to cut corners in college. Some classes are truly horrible and learning as much as you possibly could from them would prove tortuous. I don't know if that's the case here, but regardless, talk about being overly idealistic. Does anyone have any real answers for her?

No, that's the idealistic view of education. The reality of education is that the grades matter; that's what it's all about. Perhaps some of you "wise elders" have forgotten that.
For God's sake, just answer her question.

To answer the question:
The one you DON'T study for is the one they will ask. Period.

There's a statistical way to make it so that that's okay, though, Sueleen. If you know a certain amount, you are guaranteed to be able to answer the question, even if ones you didn't study do appear on the test. You can just opt out of them, and answer ones you did study.
Here, look at this thread I posted a while back:

The problem is that I don't understand the process used to figure it out, and we're hoping somebody can explain it.

Find somebody in the class you can trust not to blow off the assignment and split the essays - you do 4, he/she does 4. Make them due before the midterm so you can swap answers and study the ones you didn't write.
You don't have to do four full-on essays, just write a few bullet points to organize your thoughts. Find more people to join, do even less work.
