Posted: 6/30/05 at 11:59pmI had a choral director who threw me out of a choir the day we opened because I left 10 minutes early to run to rehearse for another show I was in when he was discussing tuxedos to the men in the choir- - He called me back the next day and said he was out of line and wanted me to come back for the rest of the run, but it was not fun at the time (It was Sait-Saen's Christmas Oratorio and I was the Soprano soloist and had rehearsed my butt off up to then)

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:01amOkay.. this is long and confusing. I've been in competition with this one kid for roles since I was in 7th grade, his name is Justin so he goes ahead days before our show of DAMN YANKEES in which he is to play the devil he posts on his LJ all this bull crap of how our star sounds like Kermit The Frog and that about people's personal lives. And so I posted on there for him to be quite and he told me that my voice made him want to jump off a cliff which is exactly what I said about him about 2 months previsouly. I hate this boy, I want him to go die... he pisses me off so much. Im so glad that this summer he opted out of summer theater while I decided to do it.

I had a director who cast me as a shark girl in West Side Story, had me learn the harmonies to "America," and saw me show up to all the rehearsals. Come the time for blocking, I arrive there, and she tells me she "forgot" to put me in the blocking. So I was not in the number, and she knew darn well I wanted to be in that number more than ANYTHING. And, now, I'm not going to pretend I'm some amazing talent, but I would've put so much more energy and excitement into that number than the girls who were in it, all of whom looked as if they'd rather be doing anything else besides performing that number.
That same director stopped a read-through rehearsal to drag me out of rehearsal, and yell in front of everyone that I was out of the show because I was talking during rehearsal. I was not talking. It was actually the guy who played Tony, go figure.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 12:07amHe told me to be more stupid cause my character Smokey was stupid but he gave me these tips to be like really stupid so the audience would laugh at how bad I was, i took his "advice" and did the total stupid funny routine and got huge laughs while he missed lines and cues.

My mom directed Greetings! at a community theatre not too long ago, and one of the cast members from The Curious Savage came to see it. You see, when she was in "Savage", she was REALLY nice. I mean...almost scary nice. Anyway, she told the cast that she loved it. But, thank god for one of the cast member's dad, whom had overheard her saying to her friends that she hated it, and she wanted her money back.
Can you say back stabber?

I worked twice under a director of a summer community Shakespeare in the Park production who, in following years, claimed that my brother "emotionally raped her," said that this was worse than a cast member's ACTUAL rape a few months prior, and kicked out said cast member and her boyfriend for being friends with my brother.
And that's only what happened THIS year. I quit doing the shows and I can't get away from her insanity.

Posted: 7/1/05 at 6:34amI worked for a man who was a complete monster. He used to talk to us during the (very rare) breaks in rehearsals - telling us that Equity was on it's way out because directors need to be able to have actors at their beck and call for 12 to 15 hour rehearsal days - this guy was a real bastard. I injured myself during a performance early in our long run and had to wear a brace that made it impossible to do some of his blocking. He called and said I must take whatever drugs I needed to stop the pain so that I could get the brace off and do the show HIS WAY OR ELSE. Fortunately the Producer was a very kind man and told me to do what I needed to get better and to ignore the director - then the director called me and asked me if he needed to replace me - he was trying to get me to quit the show. I refused and told him that if he wanted me out he'd have to fire me. He had no say in that matter and so I was allowed to continue the full run of the show, which was a few months if I remember correctly. I would never audition for a show again if I found out he was going to be the director.

Wow redhotinnyc2! That is craziness!
I did a production of ANYTHING GOES many moons ago that was directed and choreographed by a semi-famous Broadway performers husband. Well, he thought he was the deal. The way he talked to the cast you would have thought that he was Merrick. Bennet and Fosse all rolled into one. Needless to say, he painfully miscast several roles, the blocking was rather amateurish and the choreography sucked the big one. He snapped during a rehearsal and screamed at me, "What are you doing? Why are you crossing there?" well, I told him that he had told me to cross there. He couldn't believe it and he went off on some rant about how he was too brilliant to let me cross there, etc. He stopped and looked at me and I said "Are you done?" He replied, "Yes." I then smiled and said, "Where would you like me to cross" he told me and we then carried on with the rehearsal. During break he came over to me and said that the stage manager told him that I was indeed correct and that he couldn't believe that he would ever be wrong.
Ya know, I can't say that I have ever heard of him directing or choreographing anything ever again.
