Let's follow the money. Have a look at the list of top political contributors from Big Pharma at http://www.opensecrets.org/industries/indus.php?Ind=H04

In this town, Big Pharma and K St are synonymous. Call me naive but I'd much rather see the leading contributors pool their resources to lower the costs of producing, distributing, and marketing prescription drugs. And if $5 million gets you in the game, its an industry exclusively for either established firms with deep pockets looking to branch out or startups with very generous angel investors.

A list of notable Big Pharma IPO filings is available at http://www.biospace.com/news_subject_all_results.aspx?CatagoryId=40069

I don't think he's grinning anymore. His phone number (above) and address in the Murray Hill section of NY have both been published all over the Internet, as has his OKCupid account and, probably, any other information he might previously have thought private.

I'm not usually one for online stonings, but in this case, he deserves worse.

to be clear, daraprim is the brand name for pyrimethamine, which is NOT an AIDS drug, per se. it is an antimicrobial whose modern usage is mostly for parasitic infections of the brain from toxoplasma.

probably most modern HIV providers can count on their fingers how many new cases of toxoplasmosis they've seen in the past decade. as long as people get tested, and as long as patients get their HIV under control, it's getting increasingly rare, as HIV has to get pretty advanced in order for you to get it. you're more likely to see it in organ transplant patients in the modern era. aside from that, probably bactrim is fine as an alternative (bactrim being the brand name of trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole... pyrimethamine works the same way as trimethroprim, though on average the former appears more potent in petri dish situations). this was of course horrible, but it was likely to backfire for that reason alone (i don't think he would have made his money back).
