While searching thru the Expo 67 site, I learned that Montreal wants to host another World's Fair in 2017
Having missed the first one, would love to see this if it actually happens
San Francisco is trying for one in 2020
Only if you're Mayan.
if I recall Expo 67 was a pretty big flop...why would they even want to host it again?
Sweet...Maybe I'll drive down. I'll see if my 2017 calendar is free.

"if I recall Expo 67 was a pretty big flop"
It wasn't a big flop at all, it was a big success. I went to it the summer between kindergarden and first grade and that began my love affair with the city of Montreal that grows stronger every year.
A couple of years ago I took my friend over to the islands Expo was held on and vividly described what was where, including where the monorail went through the US pavillion, which is now a biosphere. He was shocked by how much I remember, but it left a BIG impression on me.
This past October we rented bikes and rode over there. While in Toronto in May I picked up an Expo DVD at the CBC store. It was a really interesting look at how in the midst of very turbulent times along comes this event that's essentially a throwback with a view of the future that was already seeming slightly out of date.
I of course would love to go to another Expo in Montreal. I just don't know if it could happen again, or if, as I suspect, Disney World and Epcot Center have essentially cornered and tapped the market for World's Fairs.
I know one thing they wouldn't be able to do again, which I learned about on the DVD. They wouldn't be able to dump DDT in the St. Lawrence River to kill the annoying flies that showed up during Expo. Apparently there were LOTS of dead fish and birds after that environmentally unfriendly move.
I stand corrected, should have done my research first......
"Expo 67 cost Canada, Québec and Montréal $283 million to put together and to run. Independent economic studies indicated that the return to federal, provincial and municipal taxpayers was almost double that amount. For example, the increase in tourist revenues in 1967 directly related to Expo was calculated at $480 million."
I was at Expo 67 as a 9 year old. It was magic just as Namo describes it. I was in Montreal again this past August and visited all the Expo related buildings and was also suprised at all that I remembered as I told my friend about the experience. That was also the year I met all my mother's French Canadian relatives for the first time. Good stuff! I hope 2017 happens!

I didn't know you had some French Canadian in you, SOMMS. Move a little closer to me, would ya?
Please tell me you rode the Gyrotron? It was so post-modern that even as a would-be first grader I almost exclaimed: "This is like an acid trip."

The best side of SOMMS is his French Canadian side. But I'm rather biased, being his cousin and all. Nous sommes Quebecois!

Very French Canadian Namo! My grandfather was one of 19 from Quebec and my grandmother was Acadian from Memramcook, New Brunswick. Bluemoon and I really are related through that branch of the families. I visited one of mothers 90 year old cousins while in Quebec in August. She still only speaks French. Divine!

I thought World's Fairs were still going strong, but since the U.S. is not a member or the producing organization, we don't hear much about them.

It would not be unlike me to be culturally ethnocentric, but I just assumed they were pretty much over and done with.
I did a little digging and found that Roxy's characterization that Montreal wants to host another Expo to be a bit overstating things. The mayor of Montreal, anyway, said it's not something he thinks about since he has infrastructure issues that he needs to take care of.
There is an independent Canadian group that has proposed an Expo for the sesquecentennial of Canada, and they suggested Montreal do an Expo Redux.
To Namo it is listed . The website is www.expo17.ca.
The NY Worlds Fair of 1964/65 was not officially sanctioned by the BIE & was not an official Worlds Fair
The one in Vancouver in 1986 was great. Vancouver was a beautiful city.
