Memories! I just looooved this show back in the 80s. Just happened to channel surf across it the other day - back to back episodes all day. Don't know if this will continue, but a blast from the past! with all those great guest stars, Donna McKechnie, etc. And the fabulous Albert Haque, Debbie Allen and incredibly talented (now deceased) Gene Anthony Ray! Such an unfortunate downfall and early death. SUCH charisma and G-d given talent.

i loved it too...i even still have the songbooks from the show, not ALL the songs but most of the original ones. i wish there was a non-cheesy current update, like GLEE but just going ahead and admitting it's a showbiz high school. i even like the movie=remake pretty well, though it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been.

Tiny, if you'd been in the theater for Carrie, you'd dial down the superlatives for Mr. Anthony Ray.

They took a great movie and made dreck. The first season wasn't bad. By the second season it had become a showcase for the dreadful choreography of Debbie Allen. The nicest thing about the original movie was that Debbie Allen had two lines.

I also loved how , what was supposed to be The High School of Performing Arts in NYC, they didn't have one gay student. In reality it would be the straights who were the minority.

must disagree about La Allen, respectfully. And for the time period, i thought the students were pretty progressive...you could read gay subtext certainly into some choices (as compared to, say, WELCOME BACK CARTER or ROOM 222).

I only posted because of the "nostalgia" effect. It was by no means some genius show, just a pretty formulaic drama series which focused on young people pursuing a life in the arts. Also cashing in on the movie FAME, and also FLASHDANCE. Since I was only in my early 20's at the time, I enjoyed the show. And yes, Namo, I DID see CARRIE, and Mr Anthony Ray was not used well at all. Nevertheless, I still very much enjoyed him in the TV show. WELCOME BACK KOTTER. is (imho) the best of those high school TV shows. My Mom, a teacher, never missed an episode. I also used to LOVE "THE WHITE SHADOW" (late 70s?). Anyone?

oh yeah! WHITE SHADOW was great and Ken Howard was a great B'way leading man too...

I loved Fame - I was also three when it premiered but I do remember watching it and enjoying the songs/dancing

What I remember most about that series isn't a lot. The "Desdemona" number with a rock/Elizabethan musical arrangement. That was great.

Also, Valerie what's-her-name, who had a very nice voice. Clear as a bell. Not trained, just genuine, in the Mamma Cass vein. I always loved it when she sang.

Loved the first season when I was a kid, but it really slid downhill when it was booted from NBC and picked up as a syndicated series.

What sort of blew my mind watching the first season was how EXPENSIVE it all looks! New York locations, a large central cast, tons of extras, dancers, choreography, a new set of original songs each week...FAME was one pricey show.
I also quite liked "Desdemona"

I never watched it growing up, but I bought the first season when it was released on dvd. Totally fell in love with Lee Curreri. I've only seen the first two seasons, but I'd LOVE to watch the episodes Michael Cerveris was in!

Didnt this get the Axe after 2 seasons in America?
I think here in the UK it ran for 6 or 7 seasons. I can remember hating Eastenders when it started because it took over from Fame lol
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

It still aired in America, but it was a syndicated show, like Oprah or Entertainment Tonight. Still, all major markets carried it. But it wasn't a big hit when it aired the original episodes in syndication (seasons 3 on). The only reason it kept getting picked up for a new season was because of its phenomenal success in Europe, primarily the UK.

I know what you mean. She had such a warmth to her voice...it reminded me of Bette Midler sometimes. I liked her a lot more than the movie Doris.

Didn't compare to the movie, but it was fun! I always thought that Lee Curreri (Bruno) and Mark Goodman--a veejay on MTV at the time--looked eerily alike.
