I am putting together a slideshow of memories for a group of friends and am looking for some music to play with it...
Something thoughtful and memorable about friendship... the kind of songs that will leave everyone with teary eyes.
And it most definitely can be ANY genre of music. It can also be a "journey of life" type song... moving on, reaching dreams, being true to oneself, wishing a friend good luck in life, etc.
Any thoughts?

The first one that popped into my head was Power of Two by the Indigo Girls. It works well for any strong bond between two people and intentionally remains neutral as to whether it is about friendships, relationships or marriages. Although if this is for a group of friends the title alone may be limiting. Still, it's a beautiful song.
Come to think of it, they have many other songs about friendship and the "journey of life". Power of Two may not work, but give some of their other stuff a listen. You may find what you're looking for.
(ETA - the heartbreak of the bait-and-switch thread title.)

"So Long, Dearie"--"Hello, Dolly!" is fantastic.
But if you do choose that one, choose the one with Babara Striesand from the movie. I just like the tempo to it more than I like the slow moving original.

"Don't Like Goodbyes" by Truman Capote and Harold Arlen from "House of Flowers"
"I Promise You a Happy Ending" by Jerry Herman from "Mack and Mabel"
"Goodbye for Now" by Stephen Sondheim from the film "Reds"

Circle Game - that's Joni Mitchell, right?
And, since of course I immediately thought of musical songs, Anytime from Elegies. Gets me every time.

This probably isn't the kind you're looking for but I was thinking of the Graduation Song by Vitamin C.
More-so the chorus...
Edit: And I thought of another one, perhaps better.

The Beatles' "In My Life." One of my favorites. And it was my class' graduation song.
You might also want to check out "Why Georgia" by John Mayer.

Hah, I was just going to say do NOT play "For Good." One gets tired of hearing it at every single graduation/convocation.
"I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLaughlin is a beautiful one. It was my song with my best friend in 8th grade and it still makes me cry all these years later.
"Here's to the Night" by Eve 6 is another fun/corny one.
"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.
Kitzy's Avatar du Jour: Kitzy as Little Red Ridinghood in her college's production of "Into the Woods"

I know Kitz---I'm tired of it too...but it does fit.
I know my dad has also used "Memories" by Barbra Streisand for slide shows in the past. Of course, everytime I hear that song, it reminds me of the movie "Big".
OOH...."Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets Take Manhattan is a good one too!

I know that these were classified as graduation songs, but:
Vitamin C - The Graduation Song
Green Day - Time of Your Life

Only use "Saying Goodbye" if you want everybody to dissolve into a big fat emotional mess. :) Even now, I can't listen to it in any context without falling apart.
I thought of another one: "Once Before I Go", either the original or the Boy From Oz version.

Closing Time - Semisonic
Closing time - time for you to go out, go out into the world.
Closing time - turn the lights up over every boy and every girl.
Closing time - one last call for alcohol, so finish your whiskey or beer.
Closing time - you don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...
Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from.
Closing time - this room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters
come.
So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits - I hope you have found
a
friend.
Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning'send.
Yeah, I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...
Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from...
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...
